Things are finally flowering!

Use this forum for identification of plants and flowers found in the UK. To allow us to help provide accurate identification we need clear pictures of the whole plant, where it is growing and close up pictures of flowers, buds or seed heads if any available. It would also be useful to see pictures showing the leaf attached to the stem.

Things are finally flowering!

Post by Bex » 23 Jun 2019, 13:45

Hi guys, we are getting used to our new garden! Speedy likes bramble and Tiny loves both the bindweeds, although both only moderate feeds I'm glad there trying new things. They are both doing really well and hate rainy days!

Things are growing all over the place and I have no idea what anything is! My lovely daughter showed me how to text over pictures so have numbered them all, hope it makes them easier to I.D.

1, 2, 4 and 7 are they poppies? They are everywhere!!
5 & 6 is it a thistle, it's massive!
3, 8 & 9 I have no idea
And 10 & 11 are growing near Tiny's enclosure so need to make sure it's safe please?

Thanx, Bex

Hi Bex. Its so much easier for all of us to see these numbered. Special thanks to your daughter, she's a hero.

Yes, pics 1,2,4,and 7 are the no feed Poppies.

No 3 it Tradscantia - https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... nt=482&c=5. Its a moderate feed.

No 5 and 6 are Bull Thistles, yes very spikey but edible none the less and for the smaller tortoises the spikes can be snipped off.

No's 8 and 9 is Curley Dock. A no feed.

No's 10 and 11 are Ivy Leaved Toadflax and fine in moderation. https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... nt=192&c=6

Brilliant big thank you Lin :D I will remove the no feeds and leave what's ok, glad the toadflax is ok, I will only allow a small amount to grow through though as Tiny is a little piggie!!

I'm sure I'll be back soon, as I still have lots not flowering yet 8-) hehe x

I’ve been putting a few leaves in and they have been eaten so all good!

My weed raised bed is growing nicely, I have all sorts in there! Just wish the foxes didn’t enjoy digging it all up :x

Will return when spring comes if I have any new things grow!

Thanx Lin, u r a star!

Oh, foxes. As beautiful as they are they can be such a pain for digging. Could you net it off. ;)
Great news the leaves are being eaten.
I think we are all looking forward to spring and a nice long hot summer, but first I need to wish you a very happy 2020.

Happy new year to you too hun!

Yep roll on spring :D can’t wait!
Although I have just found a lovely sow thistle patch growing along a back alley, so that will help for a week at least

Can I ask on the Mallow, I’ve noticed orange bits on the leaves...there hard, not sure if there bugs? Any ideas and is it still safe to feed?

Thanx Bex x

Re the mallow -- those orange bits are almost certainly rust (which is a really common fungal infection on mallows). As far as I know, it is harmless when eaten, and the only way to get rid of it is to systematically remove and destroy the infected leaves. It's similar to the rust you get on roses (which appears as black, whereas the mallow rust is orange), and it eventually causes affected leaves to drop, but rarely kills the whole plant.

There’s a lot like that Bex. Little of no shelter and grow like anything. Plantain and Campanula are two off the top of my head.
Just a little clear glad or Perspex roof on a 4 bricks and secured down with something will see them through the harshest of winters and if they don’t keep going it will not be long before they spring up again.
