Temperature gun readings
Temperature gun readings
Hi hope everyone is well?
I've purchased a infrared thermometer gun to get more accurate readings although I also use the probe thermometer hanging down under the basking light etc.
How do I take accurate readings with the gun, do I point it directly onto the substrate under the lamp etc and what should the temp being directly under the basking light as I assume it will be higher than measuring it at shell height.
Thanks
Amanda

Re: Temperature gun readings
Hi Amanda. I have always used a gun and never had a problem with taking the temp at ground level if tortoise needs to be warmer he will move towards the center and if he needs to be a bit cooler he will move further away from the hot spot. This is why it is so important to have a gradient heat in and open top enclosure.
Does that make sense!

Re: Temperature gun readings
So my probe thermometer is hanging at shell height and reads 30.1°c,
what setting do I use on the gun temp? mine has minimum, maximum and current environment temp
Thanks

Re: Temperature gun readings
The laser thermometer is reading 55°c on the soil, is that ok?
Re: Temperature gun readings
I have missed this Anandita and I don’t know why. Possibly the storms we have had. I just have to pop out in a bit and shouldn’t be more than an hour when I can get back to you.

Hi Anandita.
Can you take the ground temperature with the gun a little way away from the where it measures 55 c on the soil and again at the coolest area. And then do the same with the probe thermometer in the same areas also on the ground.
Is your heat and uv a combi or separate heat/uvb and light

Re: Temperature gun readings
Hi again Anandita.
Try the setting of the gun on environment temp.

Re: Temperature gun readings
Sorry for late reply I didn't get a notification to say I had a reply lol.
I tried that out and Cool side says 22 with the laser and 22.7 with probe on the ground, a little way from the lamp says 35.6 with laser and 35.4 with probe on ground.
I've got to work what the environment setting is, I think it's the AT setting lol

Re: Temperature gun readings
You should aim the infrared thermometer at the basking spot, not the lamp itself. Take multiple readings at different points within the area. Ideal basking temperatures range from 90-105°F depending on your tortoise's age and breed.
