Outside Heating

Post by PhilBen » 05 Feb 2024, 21:17

Happy New year to you all.
I have decided to put a halogen lamp outside so the girls can stay out longer when the weather warms up.
I got it from eBay of course water proof only £5 here is the link.

I intend to position it above the perspex roof shinning down. hopefully
they will never then get cold in summer days when its colder. below is a image where i am going to position it. Any views or ideas would be appreciated.

Hi Phil, sorry to be so late in getting to you, I was busy ordering halogen lights. Lol

If I was honest I wouldn’t place any bulbs outside in all weathers without a covering to prevent ANY moisture entering even if it does say it’s waterproof. It’s too risky where tortoises are involved, well any pet really.
If you intend to have it shining through the Perspex roof could you make the area where Perspex roof is be made a lot higher so that the lamp could go inside under the Perspex and all the workings would then be dry.
Do you have a place for the socket to go that isn’t outside?
I would also take the precaution of having a low loop in any outside cable because water can’t travel up.
Please let me know if this needs to be clearer for you Phil.

Hi Lin, yes there are outside double socket on the wall fully water proof just by the run. The light is fully water proof inc cable used. So everything should be ok

Hi Phil
Thanks for the clarification and if you say it’s all water tight and you have an outdoor water tight sockets then I will say yes it will be okay. I would still make a loop at the lowest point of the droop of wire though.
Sorry but electrics are a bit scary and you are always extra cautious.
Take care.

I wanted to thank you as well, this helped me out a bunch, almost made the complete opposite :)
