Plant identification please
Good morning, Please could you help me with a couple of plant identifications, both growing in the wild in UK (Cheshire) Two photos of same plant taken yesterday ìn our local country park. The other photo(first photo I think) was taken in December and I 've only just managed to resize it - this was ...

Re: Female - male mating behaviour!!
Happy New Year everyone and ditto Heather, such helpful advice from Nina and Lin. Well after seeing that video (shock horror!) and having recently posted about my little squeaky boy Horsfield, who has been thru a spell of mounting his big pebbles, it's a relief to hear (and see) stories of other tor...

Thanks for the reassurance Lin. Yes everything fine other than this behaviour, but will keep an eye on him.
Best wishes to you too for Christmas and New year.

Male Horsfield
Hi there, I think I know the answer to this one but just wanted to check with those more knowledgeable please. My little 8 yr old male (who has been in my care 21 months now) has developed a new behaviour in the last few weeks. I hear him squeaking, it's not the noise they make when the beak grinds ...

Re: She'll concern
Thanks Nina. Tickle under the chin duly administered! We had such a downpour whilst at the vets that I put him under his lamp in his indoor enclosure on our return and he soon nodded off whilst basking. It's lovely watching him sleep but the slightest noise and those bright little eyes open to check...

Re: Shell concern
Hi again,Just an update from vet visit today. Tort had a good check over and no signs to cause concern. Not sure what has caused the blood under his shell but has given him a thimbleful of Metacam to dose over the next few days just in case he s in any discomfort. Heartbeat checked, probe up his tai...

Erring on the side of caution, I 've booked Tort in to see Filipe on Friday. No harm in him having a health check.

Re: Shell concern
Here's a few pics, tort under his slate then 2 pics of his enclosure. The enclosure pic from the slate shingle end, if you look carefully on the left hand side half way along is his slate cave and you can just about make out his back leg sticking out from under the slate behind the rosemary sprigs :...

Re: She'll concern
Oh yes it's Tortollini, how lovely of you to remember him and he loves his outdoor enclosure. He s so sweet, comes out from under his slate when I call him. I 've e-mailed the vets so hopefully I 'll get a reply tomorrow. I 've also balanced his slate on two bricks now so he can still hide under it ...

Re: She'll concern
Thanks both. Just noticed my spell checker changed 'shell to 'she'll'!! I think I 'll do as you suggest Nina and email that pic to his vet (Fellipe at Ashleigh vets) and get his opinion. The shell is smooth not scratched but with it being on the highest part I suspect he s rubbing against the slate ...

Re: Outside or Inside?
Hi and thanks for both your replies. He had a roof slate he seems to like going underneath, he also has a horizontal terracotta plant pot he goes in and a large plastic bell cloche which I 've cut him a couple of doors in so he can go through it. I don't think I d leave him outside and go off to wor...

Outside or Inside?
Hi I just want a bit of advice during this lovely weather. Tortilla has an outdoor enclosure as well as an indoor one. The outdoor enclosure doesn't get the sun until about 12noon through until 8pm ish. If i'm around during the day i'll put him outside around noon after he s had a few hours under hi...

Re: Temperatures again
Thanks Nina and Laurat, ha ha I think Vera is a great name for a boy! Torttila is definitely a boy and he s very proud of being a boy too cos he keeps showing he s a boy, funny little characters aren't they. Thanks Nina for taking the time to list all those ingredients I will definitely continue to ...

Re: Temperatures again
Thanks again Nina that's a useful article and now Tortilla is a cucumber convert I can try mixing some cucumber with the Pre Alpen too. Just out of interest which Pre Alpen do you find most successful, I think the one I have (got it from Shelled Warriors website) is Pre Alpen testudo herbs. He doesn...

Re: Temperatures again
Hi Nina Thanks for the info, tortoise is now affectionately named Torttila - as a take on 'Attila' due to him being a little wrecking machine! I take your point about the 'wet foods' and probably the reintroduction of weeds in his diet. As it happens I have some of the dried food you mention, got it...

Re: Digestion and temperature
Hi again, Sorry for the delay, Elaine asked for some temps and measurements re his light. So it's an Arcadia D3 100w basking lamp. I 've measured the distance from top of his shell to the bulb and this is approx 18cm or 7 inch. Took a while to measure temperatures because I have a probe gauge but he...

Re: Digestion and temperature
Hi all and thanks for your replies. I was a bit concerned about him possibly ingesting substrate (was pro rep tortoise substrate for his first 3 months but changed to 50/50 sterilized top soil and play sand in july) so we put in a platform after seeing Nina s tort table design and he feeds up there ...
