Re: New outdoor enclosure
Its ok, we won't wrap your knuckles over the spelling - lol. Heres a light read, its only a couple of lines under the Etymology heading. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_tortoise I cant wait to see the enclosures in their stages of growth. Its so esciting and interesting starting afresh when we...

Re: Speedy's Outside enclosure
The heater and tube are pretty much the same thing, one hangs like a bulb and one is more like a strip/tube - but do shop around because the prices are so up and down. I had a tube and because its long the area it heats is so much more and for night time its perfect for these biggies if they are sit...

Re: New outdoor enclosure
Hi Dot and nice to hear from you. That sounds like a fantastic enclosure you have for the horsfields (only one 'e' in horsfield - lol) and I would love to see a photo of them out enjoying the sun when you next put them out if thats possible. I would say that foxes and birds would take tortoises, and...

Re: Adopted Tortoise - General Advice
LOL - Shelling out!!! Dont give up your day job    I cant really comment on the size and weight because just like people and other pets the tortoise will all grow and gain weight at different levels. You need to weigh at regular intervals at regular times of the day, say once a week a...

Re: Adopted Tortoise - General Advice
Hiya Tortmum, welcome and thanks for contacting us. How lucky for you to have rescued/bought this tortoise for both of you, well done. Getting it right isnt to difficult but once you have it all ticking over a tortoise is easy to care for once the husbandry is working perfectly. Can you send a photo...

Re: Speedy's Outside enclosure
That is looking great Bex and I bet he enjoys the meter cupboard too, dark, warm and cozy...A sulcata dream. Once the sunner gets going you might want to think of a ceramic heat emmiter for the nights but that isnt until the temps raise some and he is outdoors 24/7. Well done in your care for him. Y...

Ah, sugru, brilliant stuff. I put a towel ring on the bathroom tiles years ago and my grandson hung on it pulling it off, as they do. On closer inspection I see the backing plate was still there and the ring just needed screwing back on. Amazing stuff. I also made a teeny hook shape to hand my phone...

Re: Microchip?
Hiya again. i have found the link to the tile thing that I mentioned yesterday. I dont know if it would work but its seems good and fairly cheap. The only thing is I dont know how I would attach it to a tortoise. They are not very big but do have a read and see what you think. https://www.expertrevi...

Re: Microchip?
Although a marker pen would say its permanent you will find that it will wear off being on the bottom (or even the top walking through undergrowth and the likes) of the shell and the natural movement of the tortoise. I know Nina enquired about something called a tile once, so hopefully she will come...

We will patiently await to see this Theresa and if she comes up to the desired expectations of other Theresas that we may know. Poor thing.

Re: What's this and is it edible
You should know that IF there is an abundence of 'free' tortoise food it will NOT be edible - lol. Thats the law of averages. A photo would be great but if you have seen and remember the flower and are happy with the ID then no worries. Keep looking and you will, one day, find the pot of gold ...

Re: What's this and is it edible
Hi David? I would say this is one of the Poppys and although we do have poppy on the database it seems the photos are not there. I will get the ball rolling to try and sort it out but either way it is one of the papaver species and it is not edible. I would also like it if you would send in a photo ...

Hi Gemma, and a warm welcome to you and Chaz. The way re usually weigh out if the tortoise is growing at a nice slow even rate is to weigh on a regular basis and providing the tortoise is gaining about 3gm a month then he should be fine. If he keeps that up you can give a teeny bit less and see how ...

I would imagine they will all be fine. There is one Sedum you should watch out for and that is the Sedum Acre. Re: Growth rate
Hiya. His hunger could be a case of him having worms or it could be that he isnt having enough feed but most animals (tortoises included) will eat for England and because we are humans we will give them more. That is not always in their best interest but if he is weighed today and then at the same t...
