Re: Overnight outdoor temps
Thanks Nina, I'm just hoping as the sow thistle goes out of season that he 'll latch on to some other weeds again. Honestly though I've been growing pansies, violas, pot marigolds, campanula, ice plant, sempervivum, cranesbill, lavatera, evening primrose and many other plants and he's just not inter...

Re: Overnight outdoor temps
Thanks Nina it looks like it was just last night when it dipped to 9c so i bought him in this morning for a warm under his lamp then put him out again. Rest of the weeks the temperature overnight is much higher. When I checked him a short while ago he was balanced precariously on top of his tunnel, ...

Overnight outdoor temps
Hi I just need to check about safe overnight temperatures for Boris to be in his outdoor enclosure? He's been staying out overnight because it's been nice and warm through till late evening when he's taken himself off into his tunnel and then comes out to bask in the morning. He has a Lumisol cover ...

Tortoise feeding
Hi just thought I'd share a few pics of Boris taking breakfast this morning and ask the question - why do they sit in their food to eat it?

Re: Shell shape
Hello, hope you don't mind me jumping in on this post, Nina did you manage to find any info about using incubators for hiberbating? I think you were hoping to make some enquiries in tortoise circles. I know it's still a long way off hibernation time but I like to prepare well in advance especially m...

Re: Is this normal?
Thanks Nina, I was out of sight when I heard the hissing, or exhaling as you've described it. I tend to step away when he's in his bath in the hope he'll have a drink which he never does if I'm watching. Anyway when I picked him up out of the bath he'd done 4 rather large poos, far more than I thoug...

Is this normal?
Noticed when he's in bath or sometimes when wandering he'll suddenly tuck his head in sharpish with a hiss. Doing it now actually and seems to precede urates or bowel movement? Doesn't happen with every bowel movement, sometimes he just trundles along on tall legs and a poo pops out and he carries o...

Re: Help!
Hi just wondering if you've had any sign yet? It has gone really cool (I'm in the north west) so i bet he's hunkered down somewhere till it warms up. Hopefully he 'll hear your voices and smell the food and find his way back. Thinking of you.

Re: 3 plants I can't identify
Certainly is. There are so many new weeds popping up but although I'm learning their identities I won't be feeding any of the safe ones. They are on a piece of land treated with weedkiller last June so I'm not taking any chances. We've gone chemic free now, it didn't work anyway
Thanks again Lin

Re: Hibernation fridges
Hi both and thanks for the advice. We don't have room for another fridge and i was therefore considering a beer fridge but came across the incubator (like the one in the link you posted thanks Nina). The beer fridge is smaller than a larder fridge but still quite sizeable whereas the incubator is ev...

Hibernation fridges
Hi Nina and Lin, I know it's really really early to be thinking about hibernation but I didn't hibernate Boris last winter as he was new to me so the coming winter will be my first ever attempt to hibernate a tortoise. I'm going to need to use the fridge method and I 've been looking as beer fridges...
