Re: Outdoor enclosure
Lol - that’s a saucy cat. I love red cats. If you’re looking at a way to protect newly planted small plants try upturning a hanging basket and securing it over the top of said plant. That way tortoise can only eat what he can reach to how far his head can get to. It’s an amazing enclosure, well done...

Re: The temperature is too high
Hiya, sorry I don’t know your name but welcome and thanks for contacting us. The best way to check if temperature is correct is to check it directly under the hot spot and again in the cool area and log those temperatures and the best thermometer to use is either a digital gun type or the digital mi...

Hiya. I have just seen this and haven’t read the whole thread thoroughly- but I do agree with Nina in saying one so young will dehydrate quickly in those new temps, possibly with disastrous effects. I would keep them at what you had them to be safe. Red Bull!!! No, I can see it will give the glucose...

Re: Cooling An Outside Enclosure
Hi Stuart Out of interest would you be able to open the enclosure/hutch and take a photo so we can see inside to get a better idea of what we need to advise. Regarding the Inkbird, I don’t use one so I wouldn’t be confident in advising about them, however there is a Facebook group about brumation an...

Henry is a Spur Thigh, Ibera (male) from Lytham, FY8 4SG. He is almost 12 years old, fit and healthy an...

That’s so cute Sarah and I am sure Titan will be delighted with the freedom of the outdoors. Love how he can’t see outside but he has the feel of space. Well done to the designer who deserves a degree in enclosure design.

Hi Beau If you are sure this is what you have to do then we would be happy to place an ad on our Facebook page for you (it gets more traffic than this forum, and you are more likely to find a new home that way), but first I will need some details from you. As you probably know, no money can change h...

Hi Pete. Here is a Hermann caresheet for you to be reading until me or Nina get back and one of us will answer more thoroughly. He is a beautiful tortoise and if you could send in another photo of the whole enclosure it will allow us to give answers. How did you get to the temperature you stated. Wh...

Re: Temperature gun readings
Hi Anandita. Can you take the ground temperature with the gun a little way away from the where it measures 55 c on the soil and again at the coolest area. And then do the same with the probe thermometer in the same areas also on the ground. Is your heat and uv a combi or separate heat/uvb and light ...

I have missed this Anandita and I don’t know why. Possibly the storms we have had. I just have to pop out in a bit and shouldn’t be more than an hour when I can get back to you.

Re: Temperature gun readings
Hi Amanda. I have always used a gun and never had a problem with taking the temp at ground level if tortoise needs to be warmer he will move towards the center and if he needs to be a bit cooler he will move further away from the hot spot. This is why it is so important to have a gradient heat in an...

Re: Help. My tortoise is eating rocks.
Hi Meg. Can you tell if the rocks are light coloured or white. Most tortoises eat almost white stones and that is thought it’s because they think it’s calcium or lump chalk, if that’s the case it would be a good idea to get some and leave it around the ground or a closure and he may start eating tha...

Hi TortmumB, it’s so traumatic for us when one of our pets are unwell but especially so a tortoise because they can’t express how the feel vocally. Is there and pink tissue or softness in the damages area of shell?
As Nina has requested a photo will be better for a definite identification of what’s going on.

Re: Is this skin problem serious?
Hiya, and welcome. No, you haven’t done anything wrong, this is about the time tortoises have a little growing time and what you are seeing is the skin flaking, like in all reptiles but with tortoises it comes off is small pieces and not single or full skins like snakes. It’s nothing to worry about ...

Just a little tip that might encourage a tortoise to put his head out for photography purposes. Hold him so the feet are not touching anything and slowly tilt tortoise forward. Have someone ready with cameras and it will lapped.
