REHOMED - FEMALE HERMANN

Just a reminder that whilst rehoming tortoises, it is The Tortoise Table policy NOT to allow any money to change hands. Esme is a 10 year old, female Hermann who will be looking for a new home with a garden similar to the one she is used to. Esme’s keepers are moving to a place that does not have a ...

Re: Shell damage Hermann's

The general rule of thumb regarding the outside temps is if you can go out in a short sleeve t shirt then it’s ok for tortoises...However, I think the rules are different for you hardy bunch in Scotland  you wear t shirts when there’s snow on the ground  I agree with Nina, it’s a bit chill...

Re: Shell damage Hermann's

Hi Richard (hope that’s right) It looks like at sometime there has been some damage to the shell and I can see where the shell will eventually flake off. What we need to make sure is that it’s clean and there is no live infection in there. A gentle daily scrub with a soft toothbrush with just water ...

Hi Neville mum.
Would you like to send in a photo showing the places that are worn and how she is doing it. It will help us to maybe find an answer.

Re: Temporary outside enclosure suggestion?

That’s the best thing about tortoises Bex. They don’t worry about state of the are enclosures. Somewhere comfy, warm and dry just about covered it.
I love yours, it’s just like a miniature cottage garden.

Re: Tortoise on his back

Hi Amber. The bigger the tortoise, I believe the longer it would survive without harm. The reason I say this is when they used to travel the seas they would take the giant tortoises on board their boats and store them on their backs to keep the food source going for fresh meat...yuk. Usually they st...

Re: Urgent need of advice please for outside enclosure

From what I can see this looks like a well thought through outdoor enclosure, and being in a rural area you are right to fear the predators with rats being the number one concern. Can I just clarify a few things first. The side against the house. There is not going to be earth touching the house wal...

Re: Temporary outside enclosure suggestion?

Oh my, what a little cutie you have Nic. Growing so nice too. That’s a lovely garden you have there, an amazing canvas you can have so much fun with but I would make a secure barrier for the pond though to keep both your tortoise out a any herons that might have an eye on it. As for an enclosure - h...

Re: Hatchling Health?

Have you noticed any change in the behaviour of Violet, since lowering the temps? Tortoise life, I assume you have, it’s a good product but as you have found quite expensive. Topsoil is usually available but it gets pretty scarce during gardening season. Have you tried wicks, b&q, even Wilko sel...

Hi Amber. We do not have a printable list for edible plants but what you could do is use the filter we have in the plant database. It works like this... How to Use the Traffic Light Filters Once in the plant database -- for example the Wildflower section -- at the top of the page you will see our ‘t...

That’s looking and sounding good Claire. I can’t wait to see the end product and the happy tortoise that will live in there.
Keep at it with the Ragwort and you will win. Making sure it never goes to seed will help.

REHOMING - Male Horsfield - York, North Yorkshire

Just a reminder that whilst rehoming tortoises, it is both Facebook and The Tortoise Table policy NOT to allow any money to change hands. Henry is a male Horsfield tortoise who is 6 years old, the owner hadn’t realised the dangers of tortoises sold by most pet shops and soon after purchase, followin...

Wow, Shelby really is making some good progress Vicky. Such a strong urge to get on with life, they have, don’t you think. The antibiotic powder is a good choice to carry on with, did Andy say for how long to use it? I would guess your vet has said it will be ok for him to go to an outside enclosure...

Re: Injured wild tortoise

Hi Vicky Do you know exactly where Shelby (is that right) passing his wee and poops from? I can’t make out exactly where the cloaca is so it’s difficult for me to see exactly where. A good idea to keep tabs on the eating is to only put in one or two leaves and check then at intervals through the day...

Hi Vicky. You must be some kind of saint to have got this little lovely this far through his horrific injuries. Well done. Re: Question About Feeding Opuntia

Hi Michelle
What a beautiful photo that is of Hector eating the flower.

It seems you have a spineless Opuntia, and I doubt you need the spines removing, they will be fine for Hector. But if you feel they should be removed (the small glochids) then just pass them through a flame to singe them.

REHOMED - North Oxfordshire. 2 female hermanns

Two (thought to be) female Hermann’s, Yoda and Patch, are from North Oxfordshire and looking for a new home with experienced people, that can take over their care due to a change of circumstances, and not enough time. They will need to stay together because the smaller one was born with only one eye...
