Re: Is my Horsefield sick ?
That is such good news! I hadn't seen his eyes before, but they don't look too bad at all in that photo (maybe a tiny bit swollen, but also maybe not, as tortoise's eyes don't all look the same, so it's hard to tell). In any case the time to worry is if the eyes are so swollen that they won't open, ...

Hi, and I'm so sorry that we somehow missed your last post! We are based in the UK, and I personally don't know of any breeders of Russians in the USA, but the Russian Tortoise website is a good one and they almost certainly will know of breeders. Here is a link to it: https://www.russiantortoise.ne...

Re: Is my Horsefield sick ?
Yes, I can understand that it must be difficult! Regarding the eye drops -- I think one drop in each eye will be sufficient, and good luck and keep us posted on progress. Is ti possible to post a photo of his eyes, so we can see the puffiness?

Re: Is my Horsefield sick ?
I would go with the 0.3 one, and only if he is still rubbing his eyes a lot. Are both eyes fully open? Re the Baytril -- he doesn't seem to be having a bad reaction to it, and in fact it might be doing some good, so I would keep it up for a while (how long were you told to give it to him)? It's so g...

Re: Is my Horsefield sick ?
That's great news! Hopefully he has turned a corner and will start eating regularly! Re the medication. Baytril is used successfully by many tortoise keepers and vets, but it only works on infections that are sensitive to Baytril treatment, so without knowing exactly what has caused the problem, it'...

Re: Is my Horsefield sick ?
I'm sorry that he still isn't really eating (although if he had a poo then he must have eaten something). Usually if eyes are puffy then it's caused by dust getting into them or some other thing and you could try hypromellose eye drops. It's sold in chemists for humans, often under the name 'Artific...

Re: Is my Horsefield sick ?
He could go several weeks without eating, as long as he is well hydrated, but if he is really not eating anything at all, and losing weight by the end of this week then because he is so tiny I think maybe a visit to the vet is in order. You did say that he has had a little nibble of something, so th...

Re: Is my Horsefield sick ?
Hi SamS, That's good news (lol, I'll bet you thought you'd never get excited about some poo, but if there is poo then it means that he ate something!). You're doing all the right things, and do try offering him some food with your hands -- they love to be hand fed -- and see if he takes that more re...

Re: Is my Horsefield sick ?
Thanks so much for the photos -- and from what I can see he is a very sweet looking tortoise! As long as you are measuring the temperature directly under the lamp, it looks fine, so no problems there. 23g is light for an 8 month old Horsfield, and he should be gaining some weight. Give it a few more...

Re: Is my Horsefield sick ?
Hi SamS, I'm not sure that it is the Kale. Even if he had had it every day, I think it would take a very long time before you would notice any effects of it, and Kale really is the best of all of the brassica family. So for now, you can maybe eliminate the Kale and substitute other things. Tortoises...

Re: Chocolate Vine (Akebia)
Hi Steve, I've just come upon this email and realised that I hadn't responded (I think it came in on my birthday and I had lots on and intended to write in the evening but then forgot, so sorry!). Akebia quinata isn't very toxic as such, but it does contain saponins and some alkaloids and for that r...

Re: Is my Horsefield sick ?
Hi SamS, and welcome to The Tortoise Table. I'm not sure what has caused your tortoise's lethargy and lack of appetite, but as far as I can see you are doing everything right. Tortoises can go a long time without eating, but they can dehydrate very quickly under lights indoors, so bathing him freque...

Hi Steve, Thanks so much for the photo of the finished enclosure -- it's brilliant! Lots of interest, space, things to walk around, over, etc. -- a little paradise for him! You've done great job, both indoors and out. Lol, in your response to Lin (see below) you said that 'he put on one kg in a mont...

Hi MamaMicah and thanks so much for your post on Friday (for some reason I wasn't notified that it had been posted, so apologies for the delay). I'm not completely sure about this fertilizer, but in general we would recommend against feeding tortoises any plant that has been fertilized. One of the m...

Re: The temperature is too high
Hi from me too! Lin has addressed the temperature issue, but I thought I'd just comment on the undigested plant fibres. As far as I know that is perfectly normal. My Horsfields have taken a liking to grass lately and they often have a thin piece of undigested grass coming out of their bottoms. Also,...

Re: Not eating
Ha, ha, well that's a relief. :D I'm still a bit concerned about the high temperatures that were recommended. If your hot area is 35C - 40C can you tell me what temperature the cool area is? How is he doing today? It's very sunny and warm here in Oxford today, and mine are really enjoying being in t...

Re: Not eating
I'm really surprised (and slightly alarmed) at the temperatures that the vet recommended (I'm assuming that it is the vet in Morpeth you went to). I've never heard a vet recommend those temperatures, and my understanding has always been that once the temperatures are above 35 it is dangerous for tor...

Re: Not eating
Thanks so much for answering my questions. Your temperatures sound fine, and it's good that the slate doesn't feel hot. Using the strawberry to tempt it to eat in a situation like this is fine, and I'm not sure what to do, as tortoises will almost never refuse a strawberry. When he is eating again, ...

Re: Cooling An Outside Enclosure
Great to hear from you, and your outdoor enclosure looks super -- lots of room, different textures for them to walk on and around and a really nice hut. Just a few questions. When they go into their hut through the black flaps, is it soil or is there a paved floor as well? If there was a sudden thun...

That looks brilliant!! What a good designer of enclosures you are! There are lots of nice little areas to walk around and over to explore -- it's super. Hi Sarah,
That should be fine to plant in Teeny Titan's outdoor enclosure -- and it's a very pretty grass. I can't guarantee thought that he won't eat it to the ground in one go!

Re: Not eating
Hi Mrsrutty, and welcome to The Tortoise Table! First of all, it's great that you have your tortoise in a table (and not a vivarium), and also that you are giving him baths, which will keep him well hydrated. Tortoises can go a long time without eating but they can dehydrate easily indoors under lig...
