Re: Tortoises and hens
Thanks Lin. Yes it was their turn to be in lockdown! We still have covered shelters over the lawn to keep the wild birds separate but will be removing them now (till next time...). That's why it's covered in poop - the hens were previously living up in the field but it was too steep for the enclosur...

Tortoises and hens
Hello all, We have hens and a tortoise. Currently they live separate lives - the hens wander freely in almost all areas of the lawn and the tortoise stays in his outdoor enclosure when the weather is good. This is because we don't want the hens bothering the tortoise and passing on parasites and we ...

Re: Lethargic tortoise
Thanks Nina. He isn't so lethargic when he's outdoors so maybe it is boredom! Temperatures under the lamp are ok I think. I'll keep an eye. Thanks again for the advice.

UVB and outdoor cold frames
Hi, Thinking of adding a cold frame (plastic not glass) to the tortoise's outdoor enclosure so that he has somewhere warm to go If he feels cold. But am I right in thinking that cold frames don't let UVB though? If they don't, are they suitable for a tortoise? We want to make sure he's getting the r...

Lethargic tortoise
Hi everyone, (As usual!!), I'm a bit worried about Gonzales (7 year old med spur thigh) as its now lighter and warmer here in Ireland but he seems to have slumped into a long lethargy rather than livening up. He is eating, peeing, pooing and soaking almost every day but has stopped clambering around...

Lawn grass
We've started taking Gonzales for walks in the garden and were surprised to see him absolutely chowing down grass. He's a Spur thighed Greek tortoise and our lawn hasn't been sprayed or treated in any way for at least 5 years. Is this OK?
Thanks,
TP

Direct sunlight?
Hi everyone, We are planning a bigger and more secure outdoor enclosure for Gonzales. Our garden is in the shadow of a mountain for most of the year so sunny spots near the house are hard to find. I don't really want to put the enclosure far away from the house as it will leave him vulnerable to cro...

Re: Worrying about my new baby Leopard
Hi, I'm a bit of a newbie myself but just wanted to reply as I saw you're still waiting for responses. The experts here say tortoises dislike change and it's certainly true of our tortoise. When he first arrived, he was subdued for a few weeks and would only eat if fed treats by hand. We have had hi...
