Weeds or seeds?

Use this forum for identification of plants and flowers found in the UK. To allow us to help provide accurate identification we need clear pictures of the whole plant, where it is growing and close up pictures of flowers, buds or seed heads if any available. It would also be useful to see pictures showing the leaf attached to the stem.

Weeds or seeds?

Post by TortyPerson2 » 04 Jul 2022, 11:32

Hello all,

I planted some random seeds in this pot, and now lots of plants have grown. Trouble is, they all look like weeds to me and not the flowers I was hoping for! I can see nettle and goose grass I think. Can I feed the plants in the photo to the tortoise?

Thanks for all your help with this and previous plant IDs,

TP

Hi TP,

Thanks for the photos. I can definitely see Goose Grass, and a small Nettle, and what looks like a Dandelion or similar leaf, and what might be a very young Red Valerian plant (but I'm less sure on that one). But the main plant in there -- the one with the sort of lacy leaves -- I'm not sure about. In one or two of the photos it looks like that plant (lol, which is certainly very healthy), has flowers or flower buds -- I might be wrong as it's a bit blurry, but if you could take a photo of those buds/flowers/seed heads that would help a lot.
Hopefully Lin will come on with some ideas too.

Nina

Many thanks for the photos, TP. I've spoken with Lin and we are pretty sure that this plant is Swinecress -- probably Lesser Swine Grass (Lepidium didymum). It is in the Brassica family, so feeding in moderation is in order, because it will contain goitrogens, and here is our entry for it:
https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... sMVA4TMIZY

The other plant, in the centre of your last photo, with the broader leaves, looks like Thyme-leaved Speedwell (Veronica seryllifolia). Scroll down this page until you get to the entry for it, and let us know if you think this might be your plant. http://webidguides.com/_templates/group_veronica.html
We don't have it in our database, but I think the advice for the general entry we have for the Speedwells would apply to this as well:

Hope that helps and do let us know if you have any more questions.

Cheers,
Nina
