I've gone weed blind!

Use this forum for identification of plants and flowers found in the UK. To allow us to help provide accurate identification we need clear pictures of the whole plant, where it is growing and close up pictures of flowers, buds or seed heads if any available. It would also be useful to see pictures showing the leaf attached to the stem.

I've gone weed blind!

Post by Mr_Leeman » 22 Nov 2020, 18:26

Hi All

Any ideas on any of these? They're randomly growning around my garden and I can't put a name to any despite staring at the database.

Thanks in advance!

And lastly... these.

Appreciate if they can't all be identified, but any obvious ones would be great.

I havea feeling they're mostly no's as I've pretty much scoured the ok list and can't decide.

Hi Lee,

Thanks very much for putting together that collection of photos -- they were really well done, and the fact that you've designated them with letters of the alphabet makes it much easier to refer to them (lol, although several in the middle section weren't labeled :D ). Seriously, we are so grateful when people take the time and trouble to make good photos, as it makes our job so much easier.

Lin and I have spent a happy hour or two going over them tonight and putting names to photos, although we aren't sure about several. Unfortunately Lin's computer has been crashing intermittently all evening, so she is going to stop pulling her hair out and will get the IDs to you tomorrow. Hope that's OK.

Cheers,
Nina

Hi Lee.
I thought I better rush this through before I have another crash. Its a good thing I don't drive!

I was going to label all your photos but as soon as I started moving photos it all went again so this is the best I can to but if you want the labeled photos I can try tomorrow.
If you click on the links it will take you to the appropriate plants where you can see if it is edible or not, I can see you have a lot of no feeds here so do be careful. The best way to be 100% sure of the identity of a plant is to wait for a flower on those that are not sure but I think we have covered most. There is one that is just a leaf by itself, the last of your photos. That one we would not attempt to try and identify that one because there are so many leaves that look like that we do need to see specific parts of the growing habit, the stem shape and other factors that all help us to be sure.
With the single small leaf, if you can send in another photo of the plant we might be able to help.
If there is anything here that you cannot understand then please do let us know.
Also, I must say how well you have done to set out this post for ease of us replying. It really does help.

Thanks both - you're quickly becoming my Tortoise guru's.

I appreciate your time and what you have looked at and tried to identify and I did try to be as helpful with images and tagging them. Not sure why some ending getting missed.

You've clarified a few for me and some I didn't have the foggiest, so that's great - and as expected most are no no's.

I basically have a raised bed which is now dedicated to Tortoise supplies, so I will move the good stuff to that and remove the bad asap. Hopefully I can get myself a litte area I can rely on. I do like Nina's suggestion of a seed pack - would you have a link to one?

Thanks again, I'm sure I'll find more. I live inbetween a nature reserve and woodland trail. My garden is very long, so always got something new popping up.

Your welcome Lee, and I love the idea of us being a tortoise guru -
That is a good idea to put all the edibles in one place but I can tell you that it will become uver run with weeds in a short season...you might think I am joking but rest assured I am not ;) Living where you are you should be able to go out and pick the seedheads from plants around the woodland and nature reserve. How lucky are you, sounds a perfect place to bring up a tortoise.
If you like I will have a look and post you some of the seeds I have, mostly tortoise safe flowers I think so if you would like to pop me an email with your address I will post you some. I think a pack of weeds are to many when you only need a few to start you off and collecting is even better because you get to know the names of the plant.
