‘Fhuair. Male T.g. Ibera. E. yYorkshire

Post by lin » 01 Aug 2023, 20:35

We have a male Testudo greaca Ibera (T.g.i) in Driffield, E. Yorkshire, named ’Fhuair (Scottish Gaelic meaning ‘found’; pronounced ‘Hoo-ar’) because he was found wandering in 1975, and placed carefully in a box and left on the doorstep of a local well known ‘Good Samaritan’ who has looked after him ever since. It seems that ‘Fhuair was almost fully grown back in 1975 so this probably puts him in the age bracket of 80+ years.
For many years ‘Fhuair had a purpose built house and pen that could be moved around the large garden but due to downsizing he now has smaller ‘residence’ and pen.
During his first hibernation in 1975 ‘Fhuair was luckily found to be awake despite being in a very cold brick built outhouse, and after consulting a vet it was advised to keep him awake in a small pen with a special lamp and heater and feed him throughout the winter, and this has continued ever since. During the winter ‘Fhuair has been hand fed because he is not very active (most probably due to his age) and his main love where food is concerned is cucumber, cut into thin slices and dipped in water ensuring he gets plenty of water (it is refused if not dipped), supplemented with other greenery and flowers from the garden when available, especially dandelions (The Tortoise Table knows that the fruit ‘Fluair has in winter isn’t a perfect diet for him but he has been eating it for almost 50 years and at his age it could cause more stress and stress related illness to try and change it too drastically) and not forgetting bathing, ‘Fluair does like a nice warm soak as often as we can.
It would be nice for ’Fhuair to go to a new home where he would, once again, have more space to wander safely when outside in the warmer months and be loved as much as he is now.
If you would like to offer ‘Fhuair a loving home with a nice safe and secure space could you contact me at lin@thetortoisetable.org.uk or Nina at nina@thetortoisetable.org, letting us know what you can offer both inside and outside, a few photos and what tortoises you already have and arrangements can be made to move forward.
Good luck to you all and especially the handsome ‘Fhuair.
Remember that species cannot be mixed and quarantine period should be followed.
Good luck to you all and please keep me posted.
