Turtles Jade Emperor Pagoda Saigon

Post by Helen » 21 Mar 2017, 10:53

The Jade Emperor Pagoda is an important shrine in Saigon which I was lucky enough to visit last month. Its other name is the Tortoise Pagoda and outside is a pond full of turtles. People bring them here as they are thought to bring good fortune. The pond is teeming with them and the water is murky. Some of the turtles have auspicious inscriptions on them and others appear to have been painted at some time. Most are covered in green algae and one of the benefits of going to the pagoda is to feed the turtles. I didn't see them being fed whilst I was there so I have no idea on the diet they receive. Here are a few pictures.

Very interesting Helen, all the Turtles in picture 2 are Red ear sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans) probably the most common Turtle in the pet trade worldwide.

Hi Michael,
I don't know how many of our members live in Western Australia, but good luck. What are you going to use the perch for?

Oh WOW - all my favourite turtles in one place! Interestingly furry & green though......but the red 'ears' have always had my heart!
