Saying Hi

Post by Bex » 16 Mar 2017, 19:49

Hi, just to introduce us... I'm Bex and I have a 2 yr old Sulcata called Speedy and an approx 10 month old med spur thighed called Tiny (although not too sure what he is or how old!)

Does anyone know how to make pics smaller to post? I'm on an iPad

Hi Bex,
Welcome to our new forum. If you look at the Guidelines, it's the first thread on the Board Index all the information should be on there to help you upload pictures of your little shelled ones Speedy and Tiny.

Yippee! You have the honour of posting the first photo on this forum, Bex -- and what lovely tortoses they are! Tell us some more about them -- how long you've had them, about their enclosures -- anything really -- we love lo see photos and hear about the torts people keep.

I should add that Bex has only put these two beautiful baby's like this for photo purposes. She is at the moment trying to post a lovely enclosure she has setup for the sulcata.

Bex has found an ingenious way to resize her photos. She sends them to me and when she gets them back they are small enough to go on the forum.
Way to go Bex. Well thought out.

Hi Nina, 2 long stories really but I was given Speedy in August 2015' along with £40 for a 'viv' and given the name of a pet shop 15 miles away! He was the size of the palm of my hand and my daughter kept him entertained whilst i went to the shop... I went into shock when I was told he was a Sulcata and £300 later (3ft viv, heat, light etc) I set up his home. Unfortunately I took their advice and fed him mostly dandelions, sow thistle etc and got very stressed this winter trying to feed him, was worrying myself silly and then I found this website. I read his home was totally wrong and his diet, so over the past 3 weeks I have introduced 80% grass and 20% weeds and he has taken to it very well, he's even eating the lawn now!
Also like I said he was in a vivarium (but free to roam house) so luckily my son does carpentry and I showed him pics of tortoise tables and we set to work on his new home. There's a pic on indoor enclosures if you want to see.

Tiny was in a local pet shop and he didn't look right, he was dull and lifeless and I raised concerns, i was told they would look into improving his 'home' etc... I went back a week later and he was still the same so I got him at a well reduced price after a very long debate with the manager! It was a pleasure to give him a proper home and he brightened up within days... Seeing him eat his 1st dandelion will stay with me forever!

That's quite a story -- and what an amazing and generous person you are! You've give good homes to two tortoises now, which is fantastic. Sadly your story (being sold an expensive and inappropriate vivarium, etc. is so common that it's heartbreaking. Tiny looks so happy with his prized dandelion.

What substrate are you using in his table, Bex? I just ask because it looks like wood chip, and Tiny would probably be even better off with a topsoil and playsand mixture for a couple of reasons -- wood chip can get damp and mouldy, and if one of your bulbs should burst and hot fragments fall to the floor then the wood chip is a fire hazard (we know of one case where it did catch fire). Plus a soil substrate is just more natural for them. But the fact that he was lethargic when you saw him in the pet shop and he is obviously full of live now shows just how much you have improved his environment.

Yes thanks to reading your old forum Tiny has a new table too, will post a pic 2moro and I don't feed him tomatoes anymore! I am now using topsoil/sand, pebbles and a small amount of wood chip (pic will explain) :geek:
