The Tortoise Table

I purchased an Eco Terra infrared thermometer for measuring the temperature in our indoor tortoise enclosure particularly for the basking area as I thought it might be more reliable than some of the other thermometers I have tried in the past. It may sound a really daft question but can I direct this on his shell when he's under the basking light to get an accurate reading? I know you mustn't point it at their eyes but was wondering about the top of his shell.
I would appreciate any comments.

Yes, it should be absolutely fine to point the temp gun at the tortoise's shell -- no problem at all.
