Hi,
Thinking of adding a cold frame (plastic not glass) to the tortoise's outdoor enclosure so that he has somewhere warm to go If he feels cold. But am I right in thinking that cold frames don't let UVB though? If they don't, are they suitable for a tortoise? We want to make sure he's getting the right amount of UVB.
Thanks for all your advice so far on our tortoise adventure!

UVB and outdoor cold frames
Re: UVB and outdoor cold frames
Hi TP
A cold frame is a good idea for those chilly moments but your right in thinking they do not allow UVB through. Maybe think about making one yourself out of Lumisol, although it is fairly expensive it does allow the UV to pass through.

Just in case it's useful, here's a link to an article that tells you how to build a UV transmitting cold frame outdoors, and explains everything you ever wanted to know about it (lol, maybe more than you wanted to know) and has some good photos of tortoise enclosures built with Lumisol to let in UV!
