New outddor enclosure photos

Post by Teddy28 » 30 Jul 2017, 18:42

Hi, just wanted to share a few photos of tort's outdoor enclosure and him enjoying a bit of real sunshine. Shame the weather has turned so he s not able to spend long outdoors but at least he can go out when the sunshine allows.
I 've yet to get him a little hut to go in and am going to look at the Lumisol sheeting (cost allowing) for possible canopy . Would have gone for larger size enclosure but space is limited plus it's a temporary enclosure.
We used 40mm limestone chippings for drainage as its standing on patio slabs, covered chippings with weed control fabric allowing drainage but keeping top soil/play sand in place. Rosemary bush for cover; patch of Timothy grass to nibble; and slate chippings in water bowl/bath area. Sedum and saxifrage planted. Bell cloche kind of hot house for him and terracotta pot for shade.
The close ups of tort munching (please ignore his poor little shell, that's how he was when he came into my care a few months ago) , this is a tray of home grown seeds I bought from Shelled Warriors, it's the Med Mix and he loves the leaves which have the little tendrils. I think I 've identified these as Vetch and these are included in the description of this particular seed mix but when I checked on TT database they are a 'red category' so now i'm a bit concerned and would welcome any advice. Can re post this query on plant ID section if that would be more appropriate. Hope you like the pics, he s a happy little chap

And well done from me too! It looks like you've built him a super enclosure, which has been very well thought out. Also, the shape you've chosen means it will be easy to put something like a chicken wire cover over the top to prevent predators (but if you are with him when he is out there then you don't really need that). Re the possible vetch -- do send us a photo. It shouldn't be a problem though as we have given it an amber-red 'traffic light, meaning that you can feed it sparingly (don't confuse with Milk Vetch which has a red 'traffic light'). Here is our entry for it:
http://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/plan ... X4xKumQyM8
It's only the relatively high protein content that gives it that rating (there is nothing toxic in the plant, except a bit in the seeds, which you won't be feeding anyway), and basically you want a high fibre/low protein diet, but I don't think that as part of a wide and varied diet the vetch will do any harm.

Thanks Lin and Nina for your comments
Don't know why my photos went like that! On the last one, although it's not terribly easy to see.... you can just make out the mesh lid which is hinged on the left side of the table and than we have clasps on the right hand side and have padlocks to lock it closed, just in case any human predators find their way into the garden. Found that and other really useful advice from BigJoe's posts so thanks Joe, we just couldn't manage the scaffold boards he recommended.
Thanks for the advice on the Vetch, I 'll take a few more photos and post them shortly

Hi MIchael,
There was no photo attached to your post, and it might even be better if you start a new thread about your new enclosure. Did you know that when you write a message that there are a set of little boxes under the big box where you write your message, and if you tick the box that says 'notify me when a reply is posted' that you will get an email telling you whenever someone responds to your post? It's just that we have answered several posts that you have made (about Jade Perch, pelleted food, etc.) and you didn't respond so we don't know if you have actually seen our replies. I hope you have and that if you tick the box in future to let you know that a response has been made to your post, that it will be easier for you.

Best wishess,
Nina
