Re: Are these the same plant and is it....

Yes, that's the same plant -- Herb Robert -- and it is edible but some tortoises don't like it (it has a rather pungent smell). Mine eat it though, and it is a useful addition to their diet. Here's our entry for it: https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/plant-database/viewplants/?plant=154&c=6#.XL...

Re: Seed mix

So glad that Chiltern came through for you. They are a nice company and I've ordered seeds (for me, not for the tortoises) before. The Pre-Alpen mix is excellent. It's not seeds, but is pelleted (or one variety comes loose) compressed meadow grasses and flowers and it is the only commercial food tha...

Re: Seed mix

Yes, the Shelled Warriors mix should be fine. I've also seen this mix: https://www.chilternseeds.co.uk/item_M50_mixture_for_tortoises and the TLady mix is good http://www.tlady.clara.net/herbiseed.htm (it looks expensive but it is for 100g -- which is a lot -- and you used to be able to buy smaller ...

Re: Peony / Tree Peony

Aha -- so glad it is solved. That's interesting though because the filtering is only supposed to work in your current session -- if you go out of the website and go back in again it should re-set itself. You're not a pest at all -- it made an interesting conundrum today for us. And also, we will kno...

Re: Peony / Tree Peony

When your 'no search result found' screen comes up, there are two tabs in the middle of the screen: one that says Plant Database and one that says Other Pages. The Plant Database tab should be active (coloured green). If your Other Pages tab is in green then that could be the reason you aren't seein...

That does absolutely look like a little torty paradise! I can see lots of things there for him to eat (and lots of long grass for him to get lost in)!

Re: Peony / Tree Peony

Hi Heather, We have Peony in the Garden and House section, as most Peonies aren't trees or shrubs (although the Tree Peony is), but it is definitely there in the alphabetical section under 'P'. The list goes as follows: Pelargonium, Pennyroyal, Penstemon, Pentas, Peony, Peperomia -- so I'm not sure ...

Hi Heather, That is surprising, because we do have an entry for it: https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/plant-database/viewplants/?plant=269&c=5#.XLhQ76R7m9s Unfortunately this is definitely a 'no feed'. Just out of interest, how are you searching? You should be able to type the name of the plan...

Re: Feeding?

That is brilliant that you are doing your research at the beginning, Vicky -- so many people don't and then big problems occur later. You are obviously now a fully paid-up member of the tortoise appreciation club! People don't realise how much personality tortoises have -- and also how fast they can...

Re: New owner help

Hi Vicky, LOL, no it's not irritating at all -- that's what we're here for! But what does make it easier for us is if you send us photos of a particular view to help us ID Plants. It is great that you have put your ID guesses next to the plants as that helps us to easily refer to a photo when giving...

Re: Questions

Great advice from Lin, and I can only add that it is possible that he is pooing and you are missing it. A small tortoise like Tortilla, especially if h goes into the garden could easily poo and you wouldn't see it because it is so small. Just a thought.

Re: Feeding?

Aww, he is an absolutely gorgeous little Horsfield from what I can see! Congratulations on getting him -- and Horsfields are a species with great personalities (but then I am biased as I keep Horsfields)! And Wilbur is a super name. Feeding Horsfields has its difficulties, as they are a particularly...

That looks very much like a healthy clump of Ragwort to me. Here is our entry for Ragwort, https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/plant-database/viewplants/?plant=249&c=6#.XLdcCKR7m9s which includes Oxford Ragwort, which is a more delicate plant, but look at the 4th picture along along in the first...

It sounds perfect to me. As long as there is a cooler place (and 17 - 23 is perfect) she will be fine. I have found in the past that if we have really hot weather, and the room is very warm, then occasionally I have had to turn off my heat lamp altogether (but that is only when it gets very hot) and...

Re: Temperature question

Oh dear, I wrote a reply late last night but think I must not have pushed 'submit' as it isn't here, so I'll try again. Basically you are aiming at the air temperature, and the substrate will always be a bit hotter as it absorbs and retains the heat -- but 42C is very hot. When your probe is hanging...

Re: Power Cut!

No problem at all -- he'll be fine. It does get cold sometimes in their native lands, and this coldness isn't going to go on long enough to induce hibernation (that would take days or weeks), so I wouldn't worry. Hope you get the power back soon though. The time to worry is if you get a power cut fo...

Re: Opuntia Prickly Pear

Hi Pete, How lucky you are to live in Florida, where your tortoises can be out for most of the year (it's really cold in England at the moment!). It is interesting about spikes and glochids. I have Horsfields (Russians), which of course are smaller than your tortoises), and I always take the spines ...

Oh my goodness, he is absolutely gorgeous! I can see why you have fallen in love with him -- he looks so sweet. Living in the Southern hemisphere means (depending on how close to the equator you are) that the UVB from the sun will be stronger, so that is very good for him. Thanks so much for posting...

Hi, You can get a photo of his underside without him peeing on your phone if you just lie him on his back for a moment and take the photo from above. Hope that helps. Oh, yes, you will have to wait a while to tell its gender. Have you given him a name though? UVA is fine for tortoises, but what they...
