Re: Temperature help!
No apologies necessary, and keep those questions coming! This is a really interesting -- and difficult -- question, and something we all struggle with. There are two temperatures, as you've discovered -- the air temperature and the surface (substrate) temperaturre). I tend to measure the air tempera...

Re: Travelling with a tortoise
That looks great, Steve! Shame about the reptile shop -- but it's a common experience that people have. I could send you links to authoritative articles that you could show to him, explaining why vivariums are very bad environments for tortoises and why tortoise tables are good, like this from The T...

Re: white spots on shell
Hi Jonathan, If you can tell me where you iive (just the county and town) then we will try and find a suitable vet for you. Just send it to nina@thetortoisetable.org.uk If you could post a photo of your tortoise, we might be able to see whether it is the same problem or not. Has your tortoise just w...

Re: white spots on shell
Hi Scumpy and many thanks for the photos! My colleague, Lin, and I have looked at the photos and here is what we think: The tortoise with the white dots, definitely needs to be seen by a qualified reptile/'exotics' vet, as it looks like he might have some form of shell rot or fungus that needs treat...

Re: Travelling with a tortoise
Hi Steve, Which one did you get (they're not all the same)? The best are the T5 HO (high output) 12% tubes. How long was it? I would always get as long a one as possible so that it covers a lot of your table. I have a 4' one in my 7' table. You also, of course need the starter unit to go with it. Do...

Re: Travelling with a tortoise
Hmm, that's difficult. First of all is your thermometer a max/min one? If so then check that the temperature that is showing isn't the maximum or minimum one -- I know that sounds stupid but I've had that happen to me, where I've checked the max temperature and then haven't clicked to get it back to...

That's about right for two years and a bit. Your table looks great, and I hope that Titus appreciates the fforts you've gone to. Has he nibbled anything today?

Re: Travelling with a tortoise
H Steve, Well, he's just settling in, and young tortoises do sleep quite a bit, so I wouldn't worry. Try moving him under the lamp just one more time and offering him some food at the same time and see if he's interested. You could give him a nice warm bath today and see if that helps too. I wouldn'...

Oh my goodness, isn't he just the cutest thing ever! I'll bet he loves the palatial enclosure that you made for him. Re food -- yes, a story we hear all too often. Here's a link to our article on how to change a tortoise over to a better diet: https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/tortoise-diet/introd...

Re: Travelling with a tortoise
Hmm, not sure it makes that much difference, but I think I might be tempted to put him in the table for a bit, and then the bath -- but I don't think it matters that much. For the bath, are you using something with high sides, like an old washing up bowl, so that he can't see out? That will minimise...

Re: Industrial machine Guarding to Tortoise house
Hi Steve, It's log roll that I use (available at any garden centre, Homebase, etc.). You can get it in different heights, and I think mine was 18". Mine is just buried about 4" into the ground, but that is because my soil is super heavy clay and my Horsfields can't really dig into it easil...

Re: Home built table
Ahh, a lovely Horsfield -- a species with big personalities (but then I'm a bit biased :D ). Yes, 2 years old is way too young to tell -- it's usually about 6 or 7 years before it's really apparent, but sometimes you can tell sooner -- especially if they have grown too quickly. They tend to look lik...

Re: Home built table
Hi Steve, It's looking great (lol, and your probe hanging down looks exactly like mine). Make sure that it is just about the level of his shell (not too much higher, which would read hotter), but it's not an exact science and in the wild tortoises don't always have a spot that is exactly 30C. As lon...

Hi Mark, It's really difficult to say what the problem is without seeing a photo, so could you send us a photo of the affected area? It needs to be reduced in size to work, and if you have problems uploading it then just send it to me at nina@thetortoisetable.org.uk and I will post it for you. Can y...

Hi Temps (sorry, I don't know your name), I wrote a nice long reply to your posts earlier today and then someone came round and I forgot to click 'Submit' and I lost it! :( What I said (if I remember correctly), is that I think I will pass on the link to this thread to lots of people because it's fi...

Re: Industrial machine Guarding to Tortoise house
Wow, this looks amazing -- and very posh! What a find that was, and you've made it look super. Can you explain where this enclosure will be sited (indoors or outdoors)? If it is outdoors, is there a top/roof on it? If so, then it's a bit like a greenhouse and in hot weather the temperature in there ...

Hi Sarah, Was just wondering if Teeny Titan has continued to improve (hope so)! There isn't a gallery as such, but in the Enclosures section of this Forum some threads contain photos of enclosures, and you can Google 'outdoor tortoise enclosures' and see what comes up. I'm beginning to think that Sp...

Re: Skin of a turtle attached to the neck
Hi and welcome to The Tortoise Table, I am sorry to be so late in responding to your post. Can you tell us what species of Mediterranean turtle you have? Also, is he a turtle (who lives in water) or a tortoise (who lives on the land)? If you could send us a photo of the area of the neck that you are...

Re: Home built table
Lol, there is nothing nicer to do when it's cold, and outdoors is miserably wet and windy (or maybe covered in snow in West Yorkshire), than spending time indoors designing and planning your outdoor enclosure! There are some really great outdoor enclosures around, and you might find some good ones s...

Hi Kyle,
Isn't this little one gorgeous! What are their names? Lin, Kyle lives in Thailand, so we can envy him that lovely climate. Would love to see a photo of your outdoor and indoor enclosures. Those little cherryheads are going to be so happy that you've welcomed them into your home.

Hi Sarah, I was busy writing my post and didn't see your update! That's good news and I hope that he continues to improve. You can always just physically put him under the basking lamp in the mornings, and that might help him to learn where it is. Tortoises have amazing memories and it doesn't take ...

Re: Herman's help!
Hi Sarah, Most tables come with those fixed arms -- which is really irritating. There is a way around it though (although I can't see the whole arm in the photos you sent). In my table there is an upside down 'U'-shaped wooden arm that holds the lamp (it can also slide back and forth along the table...

Re: Herman's help!
Hi Sarah, You've made a lovely tortoise table for the very handsome TT! Lots of interest for him, and things to walk round, over and under. Tortoises get bored if they can see from one end of their table to the other without interruption, and you've broken up the sight lines, so it looks great. The ...
