Re: Leopard

Hi Polly, Great to hear from you again, and I'm sorry to hear that your little Leopard is having some eye problems. I do remember last June that he had some problems with his energy levels and you ordered a new bulb kit and saw an improvement, but this is obviously a different problem. Just to check...

Re: Jemimas summer-house

Hi Jodie, Ahh, Spring can't be far behind when thoughts of outdoor enclosures come into our heads! Well done for getting a head start. Re Drainage. I think sufficient drainage with paving stones and soil on top depends on your soil and if there is sufficient space between the paving stones to let wa...

Re: Ragwort or Prickly Sow Thistle?

Lin has had a look, and she is sure it's Ragwort, so please don't feed it. Sorry to be the bearer of disappointing news!

Re: Ragwort or Prickly Sow Thistle?

It's a bit hard for me to tell, because I can't enlarge this on my computer, but I think it might be Ragwort. Does it have little prickles/spines along the edges of the leaves? If not then it probably isn't Prickly Sowthistle. I'll ask Lin to have a look.

Re: Help please.

Good question about diet, as tortoises are often fed inappropriate food. Mediterranean tortoises like Burt need a high fibre/low protein diet, and no fruit at all (their digestive systems don't cope well with the natural sugars in fruit). Salad leaves can be fed if nothing else is available, but the...

Re: Help please.

Sounds like you've been busy -- am really looking forward to seing Burt's newly redecorated home ! What sort of UVB lamp did you buy -- a mercury vapour ones that is light bulb shaped or a fluorescent tube one? Glad you've taken the heat mat out. A red bulb really isn't necessary, unless it gets sup...

Re: Help please.

What a lovely little chap he is (or it might be 'she', as it's difficult to sex tortoises before they are about five or six years old). If you want to send us a photo of his underside, clearly showing his tail, we could have a good guess. Thanks for the photo of your table -- and well done for havin...

Re: Help please.

Hi Mrslums and welcome to The Tortoise Table. How lovely to have welcomed a tortoise into your family! We can provide lots of advice on care, enclosures, etc., but it does help if we know the species of the tortoise (and if we do then we can send you a care sheet for that species). Regarding his enc...

Re: White stone

Yes, that's right, and I think I got sidetracked a bit. The urates (which can become bladder stones) are a product of protein digestion, and I was wondering if really slow digestion (which happens when the tortoise's diet consists of a lot of long fibres), might process any protein in the diet more ...

Re: White stone

Toothpaste consistency is fine, so I'm really not sure what caused the stone, but an excess of calcium (like your Nutrobal supplement won't have caused it). Tortoises do need lots of calcium to support all that bone and shell, and with young ones like yours they should be having a small pinch of Nut...

Re: White stone

Here's the bladder stone that is being talked about. Other than dehydration and high levels of protein in the diet I'm not sure what the cause is, unless it is something about the way that this particular tortoise isn't processing the uric acid properly. If anyone has any ideas, please post. Nina [a...

Hi Starsks, Ouch! Glad the stone came out though and didn't have to be surgically removed. If you can't reduce the size of your photo, just send it to me at nina@thetortoisetable.org.uk and I will reduce it for you and post it here. In the meantime, here is a good article about bladder stones in tor...

Re: Plant ID please

It's a little difficult because the leaves are a bit obscured and eaten, but we're pretty sure this is Wood Avens (Herb Bennett). Here's a link to our entry for it on the database, and you can see that it can be fed in small quantities/sparingly, so as a small part of a wide and varied diet it shoul...

Hi Hannah, It sounds like you provided him with a wonderful home -- greenhouse, conservatory, lovely big compound -- he must have been very happy with you! It's really sad that he has passed away, but you already have the makings of a great home for another tortoise, and you wouldn't have to hiberna...

Lol, a musical tortoise -- taking up residence under the piano stool! :D Yes, bring on the spring. It won't be long before I start sowing my chilli pepper seeds (I grew 9 varieties this year), and tomatoes. I have so many weeds in my garden already that I don't usually sow anything for the tortoises...

Hi Hannah, I'm so sorry to hear that Fluff didn't make it through hibernation -- you must have been devastated. I remember you bought that neat Ink bird gadget too. Hi Stephen and many thanks for contacting us. I'm sorry to hear that Corey is having eye problems. Could you possibly send us a photo? I've used Wickes (which is usually good), as well as Homebase and several others. At some point or other i've found bits of plastic or glass in the topsoil, but not a huge amount. I think the problem is that although these topsoils are put through a screening process to eliminate the rubbish, some t...

Hi BeccaPedro, Welcome to The Tortoise Table and many congratulations on getting you Hermann's tortoise! Re: Weeds that unsure off

Hi Norm, Aha, Shelled Warriors was the site that I was going to recommend to you :) . One way you can grow the seeds is to sow them in succession (say every two weeks) in small trays (think the size you would buy a chicken breast or two in). When the plants are big enough to feed, you can sit the tr...
