Vet update.
Hi, So we saw the vet for his Protozoa count and nasal bubbles. The vet is not an exotic specialist but has an interest in exotics and would like to specialise, he also has his own tortoises. If you remember from my earlier posts, the vet questioned his shell formation and was querying MBD as he tho...

Re: No weight gain
Well you weren’t wrong.... Weighed today and weighing in at 60g!! I know it’s a massive jump but I’m guessing he’s been unwell and we are now almost 2 weeks into his antibiotics (1 more injection to go!). He’s most definitely feeling better! Nina wrote: > Yippee! Re: Marbocyl for respiratory infection?
The mild weather has caused a random nasturtium to flower in my garden so I figured Floyd might enjoy it!

I’m good!
Now I know they are most probably mallow I’ll nip out and grab a couple of pods. They are literally outside my garage which opens onto a field behind my house.

Re: Marbocyl for respiratory infection?
I just wanted to update. We are on injection 5 of 8 (tomorrow) and there is already a marked improvement. The last two days Floyd has been up within 30 minutes of his lamp going on. He’s been stomping and exploring and seeking out food. He’s then done the “normal” cycle of bask, eat, sleep, bask and...

Thanks Lin!
This is why I don’t trust plant ID apps!
Just to add, can you tell what this seed pod is? The book I have shows a similar one that is musk mallow.

Can you ID these for me please?
Hi,
I’m fairly sure one is sow thistle but the other one I’ve never seen. The plant app is saying ragwort which I know is toxic but I had a different idea of what ragwort was in my head!!
Thanks.

Re: Marbocyl for respiratory infection?
Morning Nina, No, you are right, no hibernation for us this year. I’ll do what you suggest and try pouring a small amount of water every few days. Since changing to topsoil he’s started trying to dig, which he never did before so I’m hoping if I can get the moisture right he’ll do a bit more digging...

Re: Marbocyl for respiratory infection?
Hi Nina, Brilliant. Thank you! I’m trying to be good and not google! The upside is that, although Floyd is naturally trying to wind down, he’s eating, drinking etc. So the hope is that, if this truly is a RI, that we have caught it early. I’m struggling with his enclosure being dry, whilst I’m worki...

Marbocyl for respiratory infection?
So we were back at the vet today for Floyd’s check up. Nasal bubbles have continued intermittently so the vet has made the decision to treat with Marbocyl 1%. Now from research I know that the normal treatment is Baytil (I might have spelt that wrong). Have you guys heard of the medication and is it...

What a fantastic idea!! Thank you, will definitely try this tomorrow!! [quote=Teddy28 post_id=6602 time=1603990131 user_id=478] Hi there, just reading your post and about how to keep water warm when bathing tortoise. I fill the sink first with hottish water, only an inch or two deep then I fill his ...

Re: Small nasal bubble!
Hi, So the visit to the vet went ok! When we got there the vet asked how long I’d had him as he was concerned about some potential metabolic bone disease :( He said the bottom of his shell/scutes looked flatter than the front which worried him. When I said he’s only been with me for 6 weeks he said ...

Re: Small nasal bubble!
10-15 minutes. We are off to the vet tomorrow to get his Protozoa sorted (as I’m not happy to wait with this other issue now!). Have printed out Nina’s advice/guidance re the medication to take with me. There have been no more bubbles that I’ve seen, although I’ve tried to leave him alone today! He’...

Re: Small nasal bubble!
Hi Lin, The cave where he has taken to sleeping is at the edge of his basking area. He doesn’t venture to the actual dark area at all at night. He might have a little stomp there in the day time. I have lifted the cave out (is made of rock) and allowed the soil to warm up that was under it. He’s bee...

Re: Small nasal bubble!
Hi Lin, Temps are 30.4 ish warm end and hover around 20 at the cool end. Temp at night drops to around 17. The cave he has taken to sleeping in feels damp inside so I need to figure out what to do about this (I don’t want to cause stress by removing it but equally don’t want to leave it if it’s cold...

Small nasal bubble! *update in comments*
Hi, Me. Again :( While Floyd was having a munch earlier I noticed a tiny bubble coming from one nostril. Not constantly. Checked him a little while longer and again saw a tiny bubble from the same nostril. It’s not constant though. There are no other noises and he’s tucked himself up in his cave (wh...

Re: No weight gain
:D I’m keeping a close on him following his worm check. I spoke to a veterinary clinic via email who send to send another sample off this week and if the reading comes back high again they will consider treating as per our conversation on here. But as the antibiotics can upset the gut flora on top o...

Re: We have worm!!
Thank you Nina! As always your advice is perfect! I did some reading this morning (published research papers) and have come away with the same recommendations that you have. Floyd seems quite well in himself, especially since sorting his lamps/temps out, which is a bonus. Will keep you updated! Than...

Re: We have worm!!
Thank you Nina. I will await your reply. I’ve been doing some googling (never a good thing I know!) as I had never heard of this. It’s not a worm as such but a bacterial parasite?? And it can be found in humans as well. Google is telling me that treatment is an antibiotic?? The sample I sent off was...

We have worm!!
Got Floyd’s results back from his worm count!
Nearest exotic vet is 45 minutes away but I’ve spoken a practice in the next town who have a vet who is happy to look at the results and prescribe so I’m not sure whether to book with them or not.
Gah! Owning a tort is stressful!

Re: “On his back” advice!
Fab! Thank you! Can totally do that as we bought a different fixing stand/bracket thing for the lamp. It’s the same Lamp but with the clamp removed cause we couldn’t get the temp right as it was too close on the clamp and temp was not coming below 37+. This is what we have now (you can just see Floy...
