Re: Industrial machine Guarding to Tortoise house
This is all giving me some great ideas for my outdoor enclosure. Nina- How deep are the small wooden borders stakes hammered in against your lawn? I might look at using the same, tortoises can't dig under, or climb over these?? Seems like the perfect and inexpensive option!!! So am keen to know your...

Re: Home built table
Thanks Nina. He's a Horsfield, the person I am buying him from THINKS he's around 2 year old. (I'm saying he, but is 2 too young to tell??). From looking at the photos it looks like I'm saving him from a vivarium!! The guy is selling due to ill health. He has 2 more, but much larger species. I'll ha...

Mr T is being collected Saturday, so making final preparations. Should it be such a fine art adjusting the height of the bulb... I must have moved it a million times to try get to the magic 30. My thermometer has a probe hanging from the light! A...

Re: Home built table
Hi Nina. I do look on here, but they don't seem to be coming up very often. I'm away for 2 weeks from the 24th Feb, so will be looking more seriously when I get back home.

Think I might stick with the single bulb for now. I am building an outdoor space later, so hope he/she will be out in the sun in summer anyway. Added some fake plants today... I know... Fake plants can be bad, but I'll monitor this closely and ...

Few more bits added, house back in, small water bowl and something to break up the view from between one end of the table to the other. I will be getting a dual bulb UVB and heat, but what wattage would I need? 100w?

Re: Home built table
Hi Nina Yes that's a LED light. It just brightens that end once the upper level goes in. The green house with ramp is made of plywood. It has a hide underneath and a piece of slate cut for the top to feed on. This is painted with pet friendly paint. It just lifts out as/when needed. The substrate wi...

Home built table
No tortoise yet, but preparations are underway!!
More or less ready to go now. I had to take everything out to put the substrate in, mix of play sand and topsoil. It was sooo wet, so glad I've got it in there early to dry out!
I'll post my progress as I go on.

Re: New owner of Horsfield tortoise
Hi Emma. It's nice to get an update on Kimchi. I'm all ready to adopt now. Although we do go away for 2 weeks at the end of February, so I will be stepping up my effort in getting a tort on my return! My wife thinks I'm mad, I keep getting little deliveries each week, lamp, bowls, thermometers! Haha...

I'd say 30 miles, so a 60 mile round trip wouldn't be too bad.

Re: Steepness of ramp?
Hi, I would happily re-home a tortoise. I've been looking on here, but there seems to bit limited supply up north in West Yorkshire (must be the weather, ha). My only concern about a Hermann is, if I'm correct, they grow a little bigger than Horsfield and I was worried my table may be a little small?

Re: Steepness of ramp?
Hi Nina. Thanks for, as always, your detailed reply. The table is 2ft by 4ft... Not ideal I know, but it's all I have room for. I think the tort could take the ramp a little steeper from what you've said. I made the upstairs for a feeding area as you suggested before... A tidy home is a happy home a...

Steepness of ramp?
Just making a start on my tortoise table. I'm going to wait until Spring to buy a little Horsfield, so I'm not panicking about finding weeds and food!! My question is, how steep can my ramp be? The one I have built isn't very steep, but takes up a lot of room. If possible I'd like to shorten it, but...

Re: New owner of Horsfield tortoise
If mine turns out half this good, I'll be happy Nina!! I am having a second floor, copying your idea of using this as a feeding station with sleeping area underneath. I've got the base together, its 4ft by 2ft as it will then fit on top of a set of drawers already in the room. Steady progress, worki...

Re: New owner of Horsfield tortoise
Hi Nina
I am taking all this advice on board and have started my table this weekend. Photos of yours would be helpful though. Would you put a stone under the basking lamp (I know not slate, as I read about this getting too hot).
Thanks
Steve

Re: New owner of Horsfield tortoise
Or maybe not... Just had a message saying they have decided to give her to a friend! I'm gutted and a bit angry to be fair!!
I'm not giving up... I've now set myself a project to build my own table and buy a tortoise once it's all ready to go!
In the words of Arnie, 'ill be back'

Re: New owner of Horsfield tortoise
Thanks Nina. I'm like a kid at Christmas! I'm not sure about the bulb that is in there at the moment, but thinking it will need a MVB bulb, if not already one in there. The upstair is set up like a 'bedroom' with a heat pad on the roof (I'll send a photo to show you). Taking the roof off there maybe...
