Sunny weather
Hello Nina/Lin, A little update on Penny. She is doing really well and she has been able to get some time in the garden recently, when there has been a sunny spot in the garden. Although she is never happy to come back in again :) I've attached a little picture of her enjoying some sun. She always m...

Re: Hibernation update....
Hi Lin, Nina, Thank you for the lovely replies. It is the strangest thing ever, from not feeding her during the wind down, to boxing her up and putting her in a fridge. I could have quite easily given in a few times but we knew it was what was best for Penny and what she needed to do. It really is a...

Hibernation update....
Morning Nina/everybody, I wanted to post a little update to let you know that after 8 weeks, we took Penny out of hibernation last weekend. I think its safe to say she passed her (and ours!) first one with flying colours. After taking her out of the fridge we heard movement within 10 minutes and wit...

Hibernation update....
Hello Nina/Everybody A little update, it's two weeks tomorrow since we put Penny in her hibernation box and a week today since she went into the fridge (it still seems so odd saying that!) Over the first 3 or 4 days we did hear some slight movement coming from the fridge (not much though and only fo...

Hibernation update....
Hello Nina/Everyone, We transferred Penny to the fridge earlier this morning. All limbs, and her head were visible, her eyes were shut and her leg moved slightly (which did reassure me!) We weighed her and she was the same weight as when she went in her box, and no signs of having had a wee either. ...

Re: Wind down update (and some questions)
Hi Nina, Thanks for your reply, its great to know we are on the right track. Sorry for any confusion, the fridge we have for Penny is in a spare bedroom and not the garage. It's been switched on for about a week now & has fluctuated between 4 & 5 degrees...we have 2 thermometers just incase,...

Wind down update (and some questions)
Hello Nina/everyone, A bit of a wind down update and a couple of questions I hope that you don't mind helping with. We are on day 21 of Penny's wind down. On November 13th, which was 3 days after we started she weighed 1381g, with fluctuations in between, today's reading is 1350g before her bath and...

Wind down update
Hello, Just a little update, we are now in week 2 of wind down. Penny is so sleepy now, we are putting her under the lamp at about 8.30 on a morning and she sleeps for a few hours and is then going to bed about 2 to 2.30, she seems to be leading the way and letting us know what she wants to do. We a...

Re: A couple of concerns
Hi Nina, That's a big relief to hear everything is sounding normal, thank you! We have printed out a copy of your wind down table & are reducing lights over the wind down period. We have a utility room next to our garage which we will put her in for the last few days, it does get cold (but never...

A couple of concerns
Hi Nina/Everybody, We've noticed that Penny doesn't seem to have had a poo for a couple of weeks now, she has had a wee regularly. We are also struggling to keep her under her lamp for any longer than about 3 hours max before she wants to go back in her hide. She last ate on Friday, and as planned w...

Re: Hibernation time....
Hi Nina, Thank you for replying, it's great to know it's sounding good and all on plan. You did send me through the winding down record that you had filled in, but not a blank one so that's really useful and we will print it off and use that one. We did have a couple of thermometers with probes on, ...

Hibernation time....
Hello, A question/advice for Nina please (again!) We have been looking at fridges to hibernate Penny in, and have decided on a under counter fridge which we will hopefully get in the next couple of weeks, we will then set it up and have it running for a while and make sure temperatures are correct a...

Re: Hibernation Fridge?
Hello Nina, Thanks for sending that through, it's really good to see your pre-hibernation countdown plan. I've measured her tonight, she wasn't particularly co-operative so you might have to give or take a mm but she is 7inches in length. Last weight on August 10th was 1371g. Vet did say it was very...

Re: Hibernation Fridge?
Hello Nina, thank you so much for the quick reply. She really does love her outdoor enclosure, and she is one spoilt tortoise lol  We last weighed her on August 10th and she was 1371g, which is bigger than she was when she went into hibernation last year. She's roughly 8ish we think as that's w...

Hibernation Fridge?
Hello Everybody, Nina! I am looking for a bit of advice please. Although I don't feel like there has been much of a summer (particularly in the North where we are) we already thinking ahead to hibernation and this year we really want it to work for Penny. We are thinking that the fridge method will ...

Re: Tortoise table heating and lighting...
Thank you Nina, that puts my mind at rest. The vet was pleased with her, and she is anything but lethargic! I am always amazed how quickly they can move when they are determined and have their mind set on something.
I will upload some photos later today for you to see.
Thanks again,
Emma
