Re: Algal lime powder (calcium supplement)
Looking around for alternatives, I did notice that the algal lime based products for cats and dogs are more of a multi supplement with additional ingredients which might not be as suitable. This is from a product from the same company as the one I got but for cats and dogs:

Re: Algal lime powder (calcium supplement)
Should also say that, the Egyptian tortoise book was originally in German and a few phrases may have got lost in translation. There was a lot of confusion on a US forum around a section of the book about the use of sand mixed with loam as a substrate. Loam equates to a clay powder in this context, b...

Re: Algal lime powder (calcium supplement)
Hi both and thank you Nina for looking into it in depth so quickly. Both those product links, the item seems to be that box shrub treatment I mentioned (only going by the packaging picture) which is available in the UK. The one I linked is a pet supplement so I might get a small tub of that and take...

Algal lime powder (calcium supplement)
Hello, I was wondering if anyone had any experience using algal lime powder as a calcium supplement? In Franziska Biedenweg and Ricarda Schramm’s book on Egyptian tortoises and also on the page below on the related website, they mention its use and in the book have pictures of Egyptian tortoises eat...

Re: First year of hibernating
Hello Kate, Whilst I don’t keep Horsfields ( I understand they are very good hibernators) I’ve used the fridge method before. I used a beer/wine cooler type fridge as they’re designed not to reach 0C so in the event of a malfunction the fridge can’t hit freezing point. They’re not cheap to buy, for ...

Re: Hibernating Hermanns for first time
One thing I forgot to mention. I moved my tortoises out of their main pen into a smaller area which gets the most hours of sunlight through the day. If your tortoise has free range this might not be necessary as it can find basking spots for itself but for mine it offers them longer periods of sun, ...

Re: Hibernating Hermanns for first time
Hello, My Hermanns have a large wooden hide, open bottomed so they can dig down into loose soil as they wish. They quickly learn to adopt any covered shelter overnight. It can be something as simple as a home made wooden box with an access hole or something custom made. It may be pertinent to cover ...

Re: Preparing hibernation for Mediterranean Spur Thighed
If it’s a new tortoise and it’s inside, You have the option not to hibernate this year. This means you not only have to keep day and night temperatures up around summer levels but also light levels. This is the hard bit. For my non hibernating species I use Arcadia Jungle dawn LED lamps to really bo...

Re: Hibernating Hermanns for first time
Hello there You make an interesting point there about letting nature take its course. One of the best pieces of advice I’ve read on hibernation is that it’s far easier to replicate the conditions to bring a tortoise out of hibernation than to replicate the climactic changes which trigger it. I leave...

Hi both,
Really like the website, great stuff.
All torts and turtles are well thanks Nina. Got a couple of new species this year including some Cuora Asian box turtles who are a lot of fun.
Lin, feel free to share the info, no need to mention me

Hot weather shading
Hi, first post here but I recognise some names from “ the old days”. I keep a variety of tortoises and turtles outdoors in the Uk and the upcoming weather forecast (38c lol) prompted me to share this. I’ve started using camouflage netting over my outdoor enclosures when its seriously hot. Its great ...
