Re: Leaving Tortoises Alone
Hi Daniel Sorry was away from the Net for a few days. Thank you for writing again, it’s very much appreciated. I’m still at home and not gone anywhere, it’s been very hot, yesterday it felt like 44C. Albert and Elliot were no where to be seen, they have lots of shade and places to hide, hardly any s...

Re: Leaving Tortoises Alone
Hi Dan & Nina Thank you for the valuable advice and information in your messages. I have a lot to go by now if I do decide in the end to leave them on their own and every bit of advice is possible for me to do. I will most certainly try to buy the seeds as my tortoises are very finicky and there...

Re: Leaving Tortoises Alone
Hello Daniel & Nina Not sure what happened but I couldn’t get into The Tortoise Table for a couple of days. I then looked to see if TTT had a Facebook page and saw that there was some problem. Anyway, thank you so much for taking the time to write and give me some more tips. The garden has a lot...

Re: Leaving Tortoises Alone
Hello again, Nina! Thanks for your reply. We live in Malta, perhaps we might have one downpour during summer but that’s it, and it’s possible to know roughly when that would happen. The tortoises live in a very small garden, covered in soil, attached to a small yard. We don’t have foxes and I’ve nev...

Leaving Tortoises Alone
Hello again, I’m back for some help which I’ve always found here for my two Egyptian tortoises, Albert and Elliot. I haven’t been on a holiday for some years now and I’m not too fussed about it, but my partner is complaining and rightly so, as he thinks he comes second to my pets! Apart from my tort...

Re: Arcadia 3D Basking Lamp UVA UVB
Thank you, Nina, I always try to get them out in the sun when it’s not cold, natural is best.
Wishing you and your loved ones (tortoise/s and all) a merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year with lots of sunshine too!

Re: Arcadia 3D Basking Lamp UVA UVB
No problem, Nina, I can’t expect you to remember everyone who writes here. Albert and Elliot are doing fine. Thank you for clearing up some of my worries, I feel a lot more knowledgeable now than before about the lamps. Perhaps next year I’ll invest in a solar meter to make sure that my tortoises ar...

Re: Arcadia 3D Basking Lamp UVA UVB
Hi Lin and Nina, thank you very much for your replies! Nina, I did try lowering the dome with the lamp, strangely enough, it actually got cooler, but I think it’s mostly because of the the room temperature itself which seems to change constantly. Here in Malta, we can have a stormy cold day and the ...

Arcadia 3D Basking Lamp UVA UVB
Hello, I’ve got a couple of quick questions please. I have two Egyptian tortoises, each have an enclosure fitted with Arcadia 3D Basking Lamps 80W. The indoor temperature is 17C underneath the lamp it is 27C - do I need to switch to 100W lamps? I bought the lamps one year ago but only used them for ...

Re: Subtrate
Hi there, thanks for taking the time to write and also for the link. So far I haven’t had any problems with odour but the Nature’s Miracle sounds like a good product to have handy, especially if I miss poop! Albert and Elliot’s poop is so tiny and there are so many tiny black blobs that it’s very di...

Hello, I’ve posted here before and found a lot of help, which I cannot be thankful enough! I’ve got a quick question if you please - I’ve just brought in my Egyptian tortoises for the winter and am using top soil in their enclosure. They are two tortoises, around 30 years old and are 4in and 5in lon...

Re: Egyptian Tortoises During Hot Weather
Hi Elaine Thanks for the info on the book, I will look for it, sounds great. It’s quite the contrary here in Malta, it’s the females which are sort after. I was offered to exchange one of mine with a female but I’ve grown too attached to them, and the last thing I want are baby tortoises. I’ve got a...

Re: Egyptian Tortoises During Hot Weather
Thank you Nina and thank you Elaine for your long reply! The two tortoises are both male, I keep them separated because they fight when they are feeling energetic, in fact, I once found a spot of blood on the head of one of them. Today however I removed the barrier between them because they sleep mo...

Re: Egyptian Tortoises During Hot Weather
Hello again Nina! Thank you so much for your reply. I will increase their baths, they love a good soak :-). The Netherlands link is very interesting and I think Albert & Elliot would prefer being outdoors during the winter. My balcony is very wide and is only open at one end so it’s quite snug. ...

Egyptian Tortoises During Hot Weather
Hello, my two tortoises spend most of the day outdoors in my tiny garden which has lots of shade. During the night I bring them indoors as i’m too scared that they might be attacked by rats, although I’ve never seen any. At the moment the daytime outdoor temperatures are in the high 30Cs, whilst ind...

Re: Egyptian Tortoise Lighting & Heating
Hi Nina, just wanted to let you know that I had some success with feeding my tortoises (Albert and Elliot!) some different types of food. I did exactly what you told me to do, cutting up and wetting it, and they ate a lot of it Thanks again!

Re: Egyptian Tortoise Lighting & Heating
Thanks Nina, I will try your advice about the food, sometimes I get a small piece of what they don’t like to eat and put it underneath a piece of lettuce and feed it to them by hand but what you’re suggesting is a better idea. The link to the article is helpful, I think I need to work harder at gett...

Re: Egyptian Tortoise Lighting & Heating
Hello Nina Thanks for your reply! I’ve just managed to buy a couple of stands and lighting here in Malta - more expensive but at least I don’t have to wait weeks for them to arrive and wonder if they’re going to arrive in one piece. I will purchase the thermometer. I will use your tips as to what mi...

Re: Egyptian Tortoise Lighting & Heating
Hello Nina, thank you for welcome and the information - you’ve answered all my questions in a way that I can understand, sometimes answers can seem complicated to me! I live on the island of Malta, so you might know that we have mild weather all year round and our summers are never-ending. My tortoi...

Egyptian Tortoise Lighting & Heating
Hello, this is the first time I’m posting in this group. I have a couple of male Egyptian tortoises each around 25 years old. They’ve been outdoors during the summer but it’s grown colder now and would like to bring them indoors for the winter. I’ve got a table for each of them and would like some a...
