Re: Sleeping in water
Hi Nina- thank you for getting back to me. I think you may be into something about Fergus trying to cool down. His hot end sits between 28-32 degrees but as we have a wood burner, overall temperature can fluctuate. Haven’t clocked whether he’s more likely to sit in the bowl when the fire is on but w...

Sleeping in water
Hi All It’s been a while since I’ve posted on here, mostly because having Fergus has been pretty uneventful. He sleeps, he eats, he sleeps again   However recently we have started finding him asleep in his water bowl. Is this just stupidity or a sign of something I should be worried about?...

Re: Outside enclosure
Thanks Nina. Sorry about the photos- I wasn’t able to upload them in any higher resolution. I bought a sedum acre which now looks lovely in a pot with some other odd looking plants we inherited from the previous owner of our house. The wooden shed is at the moment an old dilapidated log shed which i...

Outside enclosure
Having umm’d and ahh’d about all the possibilities for a temporary outside enclosure, I decided to just go for it and dig up a border for Fergus. I have enclosed a couple of photos. It had been full of bluebells, forget me nots, and herbs and so I spent yesterday digging up bulbs to replant elsewher...

Re: Temporary outside enclosure suggestion?
Sorry for the delay in responding- we had a bit of a family crisis and I didn’t get a chance to respond
Thank you for the suggestions - I like the idea of the cold frame as it feels like that could be movable and adaptable.
Hopefully get him something sorted for the summer.

Re: Temporary outside enclosure suggestion?
Also we have rats! We are dealing with them but by all accounts have been a constant problem in the area.
Would they go for a tortoise? In which case presumably I will need something completely secure!
Might just keep him indoors at this rate

Re: Temporary outside enclosure suggestion?
Thank you both for the suggestions. Have a Pinterest problem/addiction and have so many ideas for his permanent residence from there. In fact what we had at the old house was based on a combination of ideas from there. I was thinking of something more temporary really, something like a rabbit run bu...

Temporary outside enclosure suggestion?
Hi all Hope everyone (uk based anyway) is starting to enjoy some sunshine and looking forward to getting out and about a bit. We have moved house recently and have a slightly bigger garden but that is north facing with lots of trees around and about. I’d like to give it a year to really get a feel f...

Eating poo
So having gone from posting because Fergus wouldn’t eat anything, he is now eating anything I put down including the calcium powder. I have started restricting how much I have to give him, going with a generous covering of his shell but unfortunately he has also now started eating his own poo! Talk ...

Fergus update
Hi It’s been a month or so since I last came on concerned that fergus was loosing rather than gaining weight since being with us. It turns out all he wanted was for me to spend some money in him. The day after I paid for a worm testing kit to be sent through, he set about eating everything put in fr...

Re: Weight loss
He has picked right up today, is up and about and eating again! I am not sure how he does it but without changing his face at all he can sometimes look so grumpy, which has been him the last few days, and then today, looks quite pleased with himself!

Re: Weight loss
Thanks Nina I will get on to that. I noticed today that his “lips” have gone a bit black- you can see it in the picture posted above. I appreciate they are not really lips but he does look like he’s wearing lipstick now! He was always a little darker round his mouth but this does seem a little more ...

Re: Weight loss
Thanks Nina I will up his baths to daily. I was only doing it twice a week as he really hates it and I was concerned it was stressing him out, but at least that’ll keep him awake. I had also noticed that whilst he used to sleep in the corner near his lamp, he has moved to cooler areas but is up and ...

Re: Weight loss
Hi Nina He did eat a little more today and then buried himself really deep in his soil. He’s done that a couple of time this week. Could he be trying to hibernate? If so how do I stop him? Is it as obvious as keep waking him up?! Temperature under his lamp is bang on 30. I check it once a week and a...

Weight loss
Hi More diet related questions about Fergus I’m afraid. I have weighed him again today having not done it for a couple of months and he has lost weight since coming to us- down to 29g (30g after a bath) from 34g when he arrived- his highest weight was 35g a month after he arrived. He’s such a tiny t...

Re: Sleeping advice
Thanks I decided to leave him be yesterday just to see what he would do if I didn’t get him up etc and he slept at the colder end of his table for a full 24 hours! I put him under his lamp at that point and he woke up a bit, but kept trying to go back and bury himself. So I gave him his daily bath a...
