Re: My tortoise escaped

Hello there!! Sadly, Jieff is not around. I still look for him though, especially in the hot spring days like yesterday’s. It was 21 C! My two tortoises are named Bamboo and Vega! They are still waking up from brumation and they will be out running in the lawn in just few days. I wanted to make sure...

Re: White and black spots on tortoise hind legs

Hello and good morning to everyone! Here are some other pictures and a close up of one of the white spots. She is running around, eating, she pooped when she was soaking and it looked ok. I see today that the black patches on the butt and tail are the scales, while the white parts (on the butt, tail...

Re: White and black spots on tortoise hind legs

Yes, those are the spots. I will wait until tomorrow since now they are burrowed somewhere in their enclosure. I’ll try to contact their vet if it turns out that it’s not shedding skin. I’m a bit worried because i could imagine that if it’s not shed, it could be an infection from a kind of fungi, bu...

White and black spots on tortoise hind legs

Hello again, I wish everyone here is good! I was away for some time and I gave my two tortoises to my mom to take care of them while I was away. Today I returned home and I changed the whole enclosure, putting new soil because mom told me she didn’t do it and it started to stink a bit. Since I was c...

Re: Hibernation process

Thank you for the information I need to check the weight again, but I will do it tomorrow since I’m not home yet. I will try to look for exotic vets but here in Italy the most common animals are cats and dogs, therefore there are vets for those. Do you think that they will be able to detect parasite...

Hibernation process

Hello there, How are you doing? I hope you all had some beautiful vacations this year despite the COVID-19... I have some question regarding my tortoises’ hibernation. So, first one: Rigel, the smaller one, is on the skinny side since she didn’t want to eat many of the weeds I offered her. I tried h...

Re: Dried Hibiscus leaves?

Yeah here is boiling hot! In fact Bamboo and Rigel are out just in the morning to sunbathe and late afternoon for a walk, and they they will go in the shades to sleep or to wait until it gets colder. Oh, and I have to show you the new house I made for them! I added some Boston Ferns one the left so ...

Dried Hibiscus leaves?

Hello everyone! A quick question for you... I am looking for advice on how to dry leaves of my tropical hibiscus (and other plants). Bamboo likes it but he would eat just the base of the flower, leaving the beautiful flower leaves, which they will be thrown away after the day is over. I think that i...

Re: Pyramiding in young tortoises

Oh man...
But can I let them in the garden nibbling on clover and dandelions? Or do I just have to starve them for a couple of days?

What if they won’t eat the leaf I offer them after two tries?
Do you think that they will be so hungry that they’ll go with anything?

Re: Pyramiding in young tortoises

Hi Nina it’s good to hear you! So bamboo weights 94 g While Rigel weights 74 g I’m a bit more concerned about Rigel because she is very light to lift (I’ll use extreme caution when lifting them of course). I tried to let her free in the garden watching her closely (since Jeff escaped while I wasn’t ...

Pyramiding in young tortoises

Hi everyone (again). So the new tortoises arrived! Yay! The lady that bred them couldn’t take care of a “litter” of Hermann’s tortoises so she decided to hand some of them out. I got two of them (still waiting for Jeff to come back... ugh). She said they were newborn, but when I picked them up they ...

Hello there! So Jeff is still missing... But I have awesome news! The old lady finally arrived and guess what? She dropped my two beautiful tortoises to the vet! So today I picked them up. Now I have an Instagram page made just for the and their story so that I don’t have to take time from this webs...

Re: My tortoise escaped

Hello Nina! Yes, I would have those with me... but I thought about this vacation and I feel like it would be very, very stressful for the little tortoises to come with us. They would travel from the clinic to our home, and from there to our vacation house, and the way back. So I honestly feel it’s c...

Re: My tortoise escaped

Update time Jeff is still missing. BUT the veterinarian told me he could give me information about the little tortoises that I will adopt. For now he said that he knows the woman that is giving the little guys away, and she owns Hermanns’. So on Wednesday I will go to his clinic to check them out. B...

Re: My tortoise escaped

Hi Nina! Yes, don’t worry about anything, it wasn’t that important, I just write so that everybody can follow my story. The pictures... the vet couldn’t send those because he had to go in surgery right after he called me. Unluckily the vet went home after surgery and he forgot about the pictures... ...

Re: My tortoise escaped

Ok, I have news for you guys. It isn’t related with Jeff but I have great news. The veterinarian of my escaped tortoise called me telling me that an elderly lady came to his studio because her tortoise (we do not know the species yet) gave birth to some little tortoises. She couldn’t take care of th...

Re: My tortoise escaped

Hi all. Again, I will update you on little Jeff. We cleaned up the enclosure where it was because no, we did not find him... YET. But the soil of the enclosure got so dry it became dusty and therefore not suitable for a tortoise to live in. All of Jeff’s plants are doing ok (except the dandelions th...

Re: My tortoise escaped

Hello and sorry for the absence... Jeff is still missing. My brother and I kept looking in the garden but since the gardeners cannot come and take all the leaves up from our magnolia, the garden is just a huge mess. In addition the temperature of this week have been freezing cold, we have to ...

Re: My tortoise escaped

Hi Nina, hi everybody No, I still can’t find him. I have my hopes up but no signs whatsoever of him yet. I found other reptiles poops but they were from lizards, too many insects parts in it. I check everyday on the sunny spots and I’m sure I will eventually find Jeff, soon or later. I looked on the...

Re: My tortoise escaped

Hi everyone, No, I didn’t check it yet... it rained so heavily in these days that I didn’t want to go outside to have a shower! In each case I wish I get something on tape. I thought it would be a great proof for me to see if Jeff is still in the garden. I believe he is, because he didn’t have enoug...

Re: My tortoise escaped

Hello everyone Day 11 since Jeff went missing... Today is a bit sunny... there are something like 20 ºC and I am still hoping I’ll find Jeff basking somewhere. I took out my action cam (it’s like a GoPro but it’s not the same brand) and I shoot some videos in time laps to see if I can have something...

Re: My tortoise escaped

8th day since Jeff went missing.
Today was cold and rainy (again).

I didn’t even bothered to stay out too long, because I could see my breath when I tried to look for him under that bush.

Let’s see if tomorrow will be better and warmer...

Tomorrow I’ll look better under that bush, but as I said today was fairly rainy and cold, so I didn’t dig too much... I’ll write here what I discover from tomorrow recognition. Jeff is being on a BIG adventure, I hope that he is ok... He will have some stories to tell to their grand-baby-tortoises. ...

Re: My tortoise escaped

So today is the 7th day since Jeff disappeared. This morning was cold, this afternoon warm but I don’t think warm enough. Right now is raining again so don’t think Jeff will show up. This afternoon I tried to look into some bushes that are low on the ground. I don’t know what kind of bushes those ar...

Re: My tortoise escaped

Yes, I read that thread to look for hints on how to look for Jeff. So as I said before, it has been 6 days since Jeff is missing. Today I was planning to look for him, but there was a heavy rain, it started on 8 am and it is still going... today was cold (12-15 ºC) and windy so I believe Jeff is bor...
