Broad Bean (Fava Bean, Faba Bean, Field Bean, Horse Bean, Broad Beans)

 Feed Sparingly
  • Common Name: Broad Bean (Fava Bean, Faba Bean, Field Bean, Horse Bean, Broad Beans)
  • Latin Name: Vicia faba
  • Family Name: Fabaceae/Leguminosae

The young leaves of the Broad Bean can only be fed in small amounts to tortoises, and you should never feed the pods or beans themselves, as they are too high in protein.

Broad Bean plants contain phytic acid (although at lower levels than Runner Beans), and excessive intake of phytic acid can result in mineral (especially calcium) deficiencies, so feed only sparingly, if at all.

Flowers are either white or red with two large black spots on the lower petals.
