Smoke Tree (Smoke Bush, Smokebush, Smoketree, Cotinus)

 Feed Sparingly
  • Common Name: Smoke Tree (Smoke Bush, Smokebush, Smoketree, Cotinus)
  • Latin Name: Cotinus spp (esp. C. coggygria, C. obovatus); syn. Rhus cotinus
  • Family Name:
The Smoke Tree contains the organic compound urushiol in its sap, which can cause dermatitis.  Although the Cotinus is not very toxic and won't harm your tortoise if nibbled occasionally, it is not a plant that we would advise offering in the diet.   Its common name refers to the panicles of tiny cream or pink flowers that give the appearance of smoke when in full bloom.

Do not confuse with Tamarisk, which is also called Smokebush, but is a different plant.
