Mother of Pearl Plant (Ghost Plant, Dream Plant, Leatherpetal, Mother-of-Pearl Plant)

 Safe to Feed
  • Common Name: Mother of Pearl Plant (Ghost Plant, Dream Plant, Leatherpetal, Mother-of-Pearl Plant)
  • Latin Name: Graptopetalum paraguayense; syn. Sedum weinbergii; Echeveria weinbergii
  • Family Name: Crassulaceae
Graptopetalum is a fairly hardy succulent which closely resembles Echeveria (and in fact can sometimes hybridise with it), and the leaves and flowers are fine for tortoises to eat.

A distinguishing feature is that the fleshy leaves of the plant can range in colour from pale greyish blue, to light pink, to light purple, often on the same plant.  The leaf colour depends on the amount of sunlight and shade that the plant gets:  in full sun the leaves tend to be yellowish pink, pearlescent and slightly translucent.

The flowers are creamy white with pink blotches on them. As with all succulents, however, it should be fed in moderation, as over indulging can result in diarrhoea.    See also Echeveria.
