There is some research to show that Gayfeather leaves contain low levels of coumarin, which under certain circumstances can act as an anticoagulant, and in severe cases can cause internal bleeding. The amount of coumarin in leaves does tend to increase as they age, and although the levels in Gayfeather are probably low enough that feeding young leaves would cause no harm, we advise erring on the side of caution and feeding only the flowers occasionally.
Flowers are mostly often pink or lavender in colour, but can also be found in white.
