Wild Strawberry (Alpine Strawberry, Woodland Strawberry, European Strawberry)
Feed Sparingly
- Common Name: Wild Strawberry (Alpine Strawberry, Woodland Strawberry, European Strawberry)
- Latin Name: Fragaria vesca
- Family Name: Rosaceae
The young leaves of Wild Strawberry, like those of the cultivated Strawberry that we grow for fruit, are fine as part of a varied diet. However, as the leaves age and start to wilt or decay, they produce a hydrogen cyanide gas, which is very toxic, and so only young leaves should be fed.
Only feed the fruits if your tortoise is a fruit-eating species. The leaves also contain tannins which can give a bitter taste to the plant. See also Strawberry.
