Dogwood (Common Dogwood, Red Osier Dogwood, Rough Leaved Dogwood)
Do not Feed
- Common Name: Dogwood (Common Dogwood, Red Osier Dogwood, Rough Leaved Dogwood)
- Latin Name: Cornus spp.
- Family Name: Cornaceae
Dogwood is native to parts of the natural territory of the North American Gopher tortoise, and although there is some evidence that the flowers and leaves of the Dogwood are harmless, there are other sources that say the leaves can cause skin irritations in humans, and the berries are slightly toxic. We cannot find any studies that indicate Dogwood is a suitable food for tortoises. We therefore advise caution and recommend that you avoid letting your tortoise eat this plant (although there is probably nothing to worry about if your tortoise nibbles a few leaves that have fallen into its enclosure).
