Coleus (Flame Nettle, Painted Nettle, Scaredy Cat, Cat/Dog Be Gone, Piss off Plant)

 Safe to Feed
  • Common Name: Coleus (Flame Nettle, Painted Nettle, Scaredy Cat, Cat/Dog Be Gone, Piss off Plant)
  • Latin Name: Plectranthus/Solenostemon spp., formerly Coleus
  • Family Name: Lamiaceae/Labiatae

Coleus is fine as part of a varied diet, but if you have recently bought the plant from a garden centre, do remember to re-pot and let new leaves grow before offering it to tortoises, as it might have been treated with fertilisers and insecticides before sale.

Scaredy Cat or Dog Be Gone (Plectranthus canina) has a strong odour and is used to repel cats and dogs in the garden.

Do not confuse with Perilla, which can resemble Coleus, but is toxic.  If you are not sure that the plant is Coleus then you should err on the side of caution and not offer it to your tortoise.
