What's this and is it edible

Use this forum for identification of plants and flowers found in the UK. To allow us to help provide accurate identification we need clear pictures of the whole plant, where it is growing and close up pictures of flowers, buds or seed heads if any available. It would also be useful to see pictures showing the leaf attached to the stem.

What's this and is it edible

Post by davidjsmith1965 » 06 Mar 2019, 22:59

Have loads of this growing on a bank by my tube station so would be great for collecting on the way home. Unfortunately I can't seem to find a match in the Wild Flowers category. Any ideas?

Hi David?
I would say this is one of the Poppys and although we do have poppy on the database it seems the photos are not there. I will get the ball rolling to try and sort it out but either way it is one of the papaver species and it is not edible. I would also like it if you would send in a photo of this growing in situ an a week or two just so we can be sure.

Hi Lin,

Amazing quick response (especially at this time of night). Poppy makes sense as I think I may have seen them on the bank last Summer but a lot, lot bigger. Shame as I thought I'd found the mother load of free food :)

You should know that IF there is an abundence of 'free' tortoise food it will NOT be edible - lol. Thats the law of averages.

A photo would be great but if you have seen and remember the flower and are happy with the ID then no worries.

Keep looking and you will, one day, find the pot of gold in the tortoise diet list - lol.
