Help identifying!

Use this forum for identification of plants and flowers found in the UK. To allow us to help provide accurate identification we need clear pictures of the whole plant, where it is growing and close up pictures of flowers, buds or seed heads if any available. It would also be useful to see pictures showing the leaf attached to the stem.

Post by BeckiiBee » 02 Mar 2019, 16:07

My mum has a large selection of weeds growing.. I’d like some help identifying if these are safe to feed to my horsfield.

Hi Beckibee,

In your first post, the first photo is of Dandelion -- fine to feed and here is a link to the entry for it on our website:
https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... HrCU7jgq9s
The second photo looks like young plants of Herb Robert in the centre of the photo. That is also fine to feed, although some tortoises don't like it that much. Here is our link to that:
https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... HrCobjgq9s
The third plant down is probably a cowslip, but it might be a primrose or primula (they are all in the same plant family and look similar before they flower). None of them should be fed. Here are some links to the entries:

https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... HrDzrjgq9s

In the second post the first photo looks like it might be a stinging nettle, but I'm not sure and hopefully Lin will know and come in with an answer. If it is stinging nettle, here is our entry for it:
https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... HrGhbjgq9s
And the second photo in your second post is the same as the second photo in your first post -- it's Herb Robert.

Hope that helps.

Nina
