Advice on this weed please

Use this forum for identification of plants and flowers found in the UK. To allow us to help provide accurate identification we need clear pictures of the whole plant, where it is growing and close up pictures of flowers, buds or seed heads if any available. It would also be useful to see pictures showing the leaf attached to the stem.

Hi Swallow, and welcome to The Tortoise Table!

I hesitate to hazard a guess because it's really difficult to ID a plant when part of it has been picked and is in a cup or lying on the table. The reason for this is that especially when there aren't flowers or seed heads, loads of plants have similar leaves and one of the ways we ID them is to see the plant growing in the ground, so we can see how it comes up out of the soil, the way the leaves are attached to the stem, some idea of its size, etc. Would it be possible to take a photo of the plant where it is growing -- just a photo from the side of it growing in the ground, and then a close up of leaves (which you have already given us) and any flower buds, flowers, or seed heads that might be present. Also was this growing in a garden or in the wild - and what country do you live in (different plants grow in different countries)?
If Lin is around, she might have a better idea of and ID than I do, but for me some more photos would help. Really sorry!

Cheers,
Nina

Hi Swallow and welcome from me too.

I have a feeling it could be one of the plants from the Chenopodiaceae family, like Fat Hen or Goosefoot but as Nina says it is much easier for us to be sure if you can send in a photo where it is growing.
So until we do accuratley identify it I would not feed it.

I quite understand where you’re coming from! I reject lots of weeds on the basis of better safe than sorry! Sadly, it was something a friend brought and no more info so I will not feed but, more importantly learn to get photos in situ first. The forum seems such a supportive and encouraging place, always good to be among friends so a HUGE thank you.
We have had our tortoise for 41 years and our specialist vet says he is 90. He lives all summer in a small walled garden with me now that my parents are older. Greatly loved as Zuma is a wonderful companion and has habits and idiosyncrasies like us all.

Reason we are newbies to weed feeding is that we were part of the ill informed band of salad feeders. But this year has taught us new habits and Zuma adores the new tastes. Unfortunately he particularly loves pansies and mowed Mum’s to the ground when he had a stay over last week!

Thank you again. Sarah
