Plant identification from Cyprus

Use this forum for identification of plants and flowers found in countries outside the UK. To allow us to help provide accurate identification we need clear pictures of the whole plant, where it is growing and close up pictures of flowers, buds or seed heads if any available. It would also be useful to see pictures showing the leaf attached to the stem.

Plant identification from Cyprus

Post by tortoisecy » 14 Apr 2018, 14:13

Hello everyone,

My hatchling Testudo Graeca, which is about a month old is very food-picky, but he really likes to nibble on this plant found in Cyprus, which I don't know the exact name. I was wondering if anyone can help me identify it and also whether it's safe to feed/nutritious for my hatchling. It's very common to find these plants near flowers (as shown in images below) in my garden, and unfortunately no local people were able give a decent name for it, apart from just 'wild weed'. Here are some images:

Many thanks in advance!

Hi, many thanks for contacting us and thanks for the photos, which are good. I'm not quite sure on this one and so am doing some more checking, and I've asked Lin to have a look and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Actually, I'm just wondering if it is one of the Purslanes. Are any of the flower buds on it open yet? If so, what colour are they, and could you send us a photo?
I've just found this about Cyprus purslane, so maybe some of your neighbours might recognise it:
"Purslane, in Cyprus is known as Glystirida (Γλυστιρίδα)"
and I think it has a yellow flower.
