Help with plant ID please

Use this forum for identification of plants and flowers found in the UK. To allow us to help provide accurate identification we need clear pictures of the whole plant, where it is growing and close up pictures of flowers, buds or seed heads if any available. It would also be useful to see pictures showing the leaf attached to the stem.

Help with plant ID please

Post by Teddy28 » 06 May 2017, 11:31

Hi there, I need to identify this plant please, it appeared in my garden last year, no idea where it came from but has come back again this year. Two close ups of flowers which start out white then tinge to pink.
Other photo (sideways on) is of full plant. Please note there's an astilbe and alchemilla photo-bombing in the bottom left corner!!
Fingers crossed I 've added photos correctly!

Hi Teddy,
Mmm, this is a difficult one, but it looks to me like it might be one of the Tiarellas (specifically Tiarella cordifolia, which has leaves similar to that). Here are some photos and descriptions -- what do you think?
https://www.sarahraven.com/flowers/plan ... ifolia.htm
and https://www.rhs.org.uk/Plants/18215/Tia ... ia/Details The flowers do start out white and then turn pinkish, so that fits in with what you said.
There are also some Heucheras that have very similar flowers and leaves, but they tend to have more than one flower on a flower stalk, and yours seems
to have one per flower stalk. Here is a page showing both Heuchera and Tiarella flowers -- does anything look similar?

P.S. I meant to add that here is a link to our entry for Tiarella (and it contains a link to the Heuchera entry too.

I think this is more likely to be a Tellima, Fringe cups. We do have it on the website so if you type that on the search it should come up.

Stop Press! Lin has just phoned me to say that this is in fact Tellima Grandiflora -- Fringecup -- and I completely agree. It is a 'no feed' I'm afraid, and here is our entry for it:

Just read latest post about this plant and link in database. Yes having seen pictures it most definitely fits the Fringe cup profile. Fortunately I didn't pick any for Tortollini as he s turned in for the night.
Here's another couple of pics.
Think you Nina and Lin

Beautiful little flower but can easily be missed if you blink.

Yes it is a lovely flower. Thanks for the ID.
I'm sure i'll be posting other plants for identification, there are so many that I 've never noticed in my pre tortoise days.
