Acanthus and Hebes

Use this forum for identification of plants and flowers found in the UK. To allow us to help provide accurate identification we need clear pictures of the whole plant, where it is growing and close up pictures of flowers, buds or seed heads if any available. It would also be useful to see pictures showing the leaf attached to the stem.

Acanthus and Hebes

Post by Swallow » 07 Aug 2018, 16:22

I have looked at the database info for Acanthus and it says you can feed the flowers but says nothing about the leaves. Can I feed leaves?

Hebes - I am unsure which parts to feed. The tips or the flowers or the leaves or a stem?

Hope you’re all well and your tortoises too!

Thank you!

Hi Sarah.
The small symbol along the green block where it says safe to feed shows a leaf and a flower. That indicates both the leaves and flowers are good of the Acanthus https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... nt=460&c=5
The same with the Hebe - https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... nt=148&c=4
To see these symbols you have to go into the whole entry though and not just look at the small one on the results page showing if its green amber or red.

That is really helpful. I will now look properly on the detailed info. Learning all the time! My sister has just collected a veritable feast of weeds- all sorts, safe and moderate feeds. I shall practice looking up the info against all of them! Thank you! Sarah

That's really useful, I hadn't noticed those symbols either

Yeah, I think sometimes the symbols are easy to miss. Have a read of this section -- it explains the feeding symbols and also the 'traffic light' signals:
