Weed/plant help please

Use this forum for identification of plants and flowers found in the UK. To allow us to help provide accurate identification we need clear pictures of the whole plant, where it is growing and close up pictures of flowers, buds or seed heads if any available. It would also be useful to see pictures showing the leaf attached to the stem.

Weed/plant help please

Post by Jenniferej » 19 Apr 2018, 10:02

Hi there,

I’d like to try and utilise more of the weeds and plants in my garden to feed my 9mo tortoise, but I’m really struggling identifying many of them.

There are some photos below, any help would be very much appreciated!

Hi Jennifer,

No problem -- and it's great that you are tryng to ID more of the weeds in your garden. If you get a really good UK wildflower book, they usually have lots of photos and can be a great help.
Here are IDs and links to the entries on our database for your plants in the first post.
1. Herb Robert https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... thuE5ch2M8
2. Not absolutely sure but this looks like Groundsel -- you could wait until it flowers and then send us another ID just to make sure. https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... tht0Zch2M8
3. Sycamore seedlings (they pop up everywhere in my garden, and the leaves on the seedlings do look a bit different to the mature leaves).

And here are IDs for the plants in your second post:
4. Nipplewort https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... thvNJch2M8
5. Forget-Me-Not https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... thvZpch2M8
6. Ice Plant (used to be called Sedum spectabile, not Hylotelephium spectabile) https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... thvqJch2M8

Cheers,
Nina

Hi Nina

This is fantastic, thank you so much! I’ll be investing in a wildflower book also.

Thanks again
Jenny

No problem, Jennny -- that's what we're here for. Hope you get on well with the wildflower book. I have loads of wildflower books. The one I tend to use most often is The Wild Flower Key by Francis Rose, but there are loads of other really good ones. Have a good look through the book before you buy it, to see if you think the illustrations and text will help you to ID a plant, because they do vary a lot, and a book that might be good for one person isn't necessarily good for another person.

Cheers
Nina
