Plant ID please

Use this forum for identification of plants and flowers found in the UK. To allow us to help provide accurate identification we need clear pictures of the whole plant, where it is growing and close up pictures of flowers, buds or seed heads if any available. It would also be useful to see pictures showing the leaf attached to the stem.

Plant ID please

Post by beeclaire80 » 15 Dec 2020, 16:18

Hi,

I have a couple of plants that I am unsure of.

I think one is hedge mustard, one is blessed herb and one is hawkbit.

Can anyone confirm for me please.

I think your right Claire.
The top one with the black bit amongst the leaves does look like one of the Hawks but not sure with that photo exactly what one. Best feed sparingly to be sure.
The middle one showing the close up of the leafsure looks like Geum, I must confess I did have to look up Blessed Herb and maybe we should add it to the database common name - https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... nt=174&c=6
And the last photo, I am sure your right with Hedge Mustard. https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... rd&x=0&y=0

Well done you.

Hi Lin,

Thank you! I feel I’m becoming somewhat of a weed spotter (is there a name for this like twitcher for bird watching?)

I’m gutted because right by a busy junction just down the road is a massive patch of mallow on the grass verge. But it’s the main road in and out of town and I think the mallow might be a bit car fumey!

I have attached another picture of the hawkbit.

The Geum is also known as wood avens isn’t it? I have got the right thing haven’t I? :?:

Claire.

Yes, you could use the title of Weed Spotter, but to be careful when googling though -

My thoughts on the Mallow is like yours and I would also leave it. However, I usually say if there is one bit you can see there always lots more that are there and you can't see, so keep looking. There are still so many weeds still growing, isn't there?

Yes, its Hawkbit, I can see it now.

Yes, Geum also uses Wood Avens as a common name.

I’m very lucky to have a large open field at the back of my house.

Our garage is at the bottom of the garden so we access the field that way. It’s got sowthistle, ribwort plantain, broadleaf plantain, nettles (dead and stinging), spiky thistle, nipplewort, mallow (not much and what is there is a little rusty now), sticky weed (Goose grass?), wood avens, dandelions, hawkbit, hedge mustard and willow herb. I’m fairly sure there’s probably more but those are the ones I’m confident with.

The part directly behind my garage is overgrown and doesn’t really get cut back by the council so I’m hopeful it’ll be good for weeds over the winter.

When I got Floyd I honestly thought he’d be having to be supplemented with bagged salad as there was no way I could identify weeds! Now look at me!

(Picture of Floyd enjoying some campanula, in the background you can see a pot with nipplewort that I dug up out of my patchy lawn!).

It don’t take long to learn Claire. One weed a week. Find it, try and Id it for a day or two. Check it out with us and spend the rest of the week finding it. Even if it’s a no feed. Your doing really well and so lucky to have easy access to a wild field.
Ffloyd looks really happy to be able to reach the campanula. .
