Foraging walk id please

Use this forum for identification of plants and flowers found in the UK. To allow us to help provide accurate identification we need clear pictures of the whole plant, where it is growing and close up pictures of flowers, buds or seed heads if any available. It would also be useful to see pictures showing the leaf attached to the stem.

Foraging walk id please

Post by Wilburs_mummy » 19 Apr 2019, 18:48

Hi, we went to collect some deadnettle and got some photos of some other plants. I hope they are clear enough. I think B and C are the same except one is flowering and one was not?

Just 2 more.

Many thanks for your help.

Wilbur didn’t eat his lovely dead nettles so maybe not a fan (shame as we have a box full in the fridge 😂). We'll try again tomorrow.

Hi Vicky. Its a pleasure answering your questions when they are laid out like this. Thank you.

A = Cut leaf Geranium - Good feed
B & C = Both are what we call Umbel plants - no feeds because its very difficult for the laymen to identify without mistake so we do not advising feeding any of the plants that produce an umbel flower.
D = This one is Burdock and a no feed -- https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... nt=483&c=6
E = Is one of the beautiful Arums but sadly again a no feed -- https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/pla ... nt=425&c=6

Lovely, thank you Lin. I did wonder if A was some kind of geranium as it reminded me of the cranesbill geranium in the garden 😁

Thanks to you both I have been trying to find out what D is for a while, I'm new to this so thanks. I have a daily forage and love it, as does the dog as we go deeper into the woods and walks get longer each day, especially now the nights are pulling out. I'm even starting to think of getting enough to start freezing fornyhe winter months :lol: Many thanks Keely Mc

I can see these special girls are going to be spoilt rotten by you Keely Mc. Well done. Oh, and welcome to the TTT, its great to have you here.

Drying surplus weeds now will be so much better than freezing as they tend to go slimey once out of the freezer. If dried they can be mixed with a few weeds or leaves from the store to make a much healthier daily feed.
