Old turlte shell

Post by Nils » 27 Oct 2021, 18:55

Hi,
My turtle is getting quite old and I can see that the shell is showing some changes.
Its no longer smooth and the scutes are peeling off, at an irregular pattern. Its all flaky and not falling off as "whole" pieces.

There are also some visible "scars" and dry spot. There are no white/ rotting spot, so I dont suspect shell rot. He also spend a lot of his time over water, enjoying the basking lamp. We feed him calcium pellets as a suplements...

I really love him, but Im all out of ideas of what this could be.... Any respond is appreciated

Hi Nils.
What a treasure your turtle is. Do you know how old he is?

When you say he spends a lot of time over water, do you mean out of the water basking/. The reason I ask is that the flaking shell does look dry and I am wondering if it is because if the basking. Because we do not specialise in turtles I would like to send you to Austen from the turtle pages and get you to ask your question on there.
Austin is brilliant with all species and is recommended by a good friend of the tortoise table.
Here is a link to his page - http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/
And a link to the forum with instructions on how to sign in, it doesn’t cost anything though.

Good luck.

Hi Lin,
Thank you so much for reaching out!

I dont have the exact age, but he is 20+ years old.
Yeah, he does spend a long time out of the water basking, and that worries me a litte bit.

Thank you so much for the tips, I will try and look into it.

Good luck, Nils, and do let us know how you get on. I hope that the people on Austin's site can give you some good advice.
