Re: Tortoise
Some say its ok and some say not. I am afraid I am of the mind of 100% no dont do it. I had a huge sulcata walk over a large leopard and stood on its neck. It was lucky I was there on my way to removing the sulcata from the leopard enclosure and see what happened. If it wasnt there it could have bee...

Re: Shrub with Red Leaves and White Flowers
Hiya Oxalis. I would say this is Burdock but to be 100% sure I would like a photo when it has grown a bit more. It could also be Honesty so it would be best if we waited a while. Can you ask Mum if this has kind of a fuzzy feel to it and how big the leaves are, a hand for comparisom would be ideal? ...

Re: Shrub with Red Leaves and White Flowers
Hmm. I'm wondering if this is a purple leaf Flowering Plum. Have a look at our entry and compare Oxalis. https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/plant-database/viewplants/?plant=596&c=4 It should be fine to transplant though if you lift a large enough rootball and spend plenty of time watering it in...

Re: Horsefield beak
Hi NOrman. He is a lovely chap and does have a bit of an underbite. Cxan I ask what substrate you are using because if the bottom jaw starts to act as a shovel then I wouldnt like this little one to become impacted on ingested substrate. I think if you pop him along to a vet that knows about tortois...

Re: Oh no...disaster!!
Thanks for allowing that Bex, thats really kind under the circumstances. We all overlook things sometimes and nobody is 100% all of the time. Maybe its because of things like this happening that makes us a little better in what we do. Accidents happen no matter how bad they make us feel. Everyone is...

:o :( :o . Oh Bex. I cannot start to imagine how scary it was for you and I cant tell you how pleased I am that Speedy made it out herself and finding a safe area. Just goes to show how robust and knowing they are. Looking at the photos of the aftermath is making my blood run cold. You are a hero, q...

Re: Tortoise now in my care
I forgot to say that the heat pad/mat on the floor really does not do the tortoise a favour and it can be quite dangerous causing severe burns. Re the red light. Again that is not needed but more important with this tortoise being in a school it should be made clear that a tortoise needs UVB but UVB...

Oh no. These poor school tortoises but I bet this one is thanking its lucky stars you have stepped in and hopefully take over his care. Remember to put your hand up for the volountry school holiday care. Do you do the homecare now? Now getting back to your questions -- Its a Horsfield tortoise and y...

Re: Plant ID
Can you confirn Amie, is the plant to the right of the one in your hand the same plant. I ask because the leaves are different making it quite confusing. Hopefully Nina will pop on tonight and we can get our heads together. Can you remember if the flowers were white or maybe yellow? Oh, hold on. Is ...

Re: ID
Thats what is making me think Speedwell but the flower looks to dark for the one I am thinking of. Does it look like this one. The flowers really are tiny. Just look at the leaves at the top by the flower as the ones lover down are different. Lin [attachment=0]Veronica arvensis_Wall speedwell_lr_46 ...

Re: ID
Hi Amie. I am wondering if this could be one of the many Speedwells but the photo is a bit blury. As the flowers are on their way to open I think it would be best if you send in another photo in a few days just so we can be sure but taken a little further away and if possible in situ.

Re: Hector falls asleep with his neck extended. Normal?
Hi Hectors family.
It is as they say and Hector is feeling very relaxed and happy in the enviroment you are offering to him. It takes a while to gain our trust but this is one way they do show it.
All perfectly normal.

UNAVAILABLE - Horsfield - Halifax, West Yorkshire
Walter is roughly 22 years old and unfortunately is looking for a new home due to her previous owners unable to look after her anymore. She’s a fantastic tortoise who loves to explore and enjoys a bath. Adores a fuss and has never been known to nibble fingers. She would adore a suitable home, one th...

Re: Advice about puffy and closed eyes
Afraid not Olivereastham. I have been reading that a lot of horsfields seem to be having this problem and I can only put it down to the cold snap we are experiencing right now or a slight tweek in heat or husbandry might be needed. Do you have your tortoise in very very slightly moist (not in the le...

Re: Very sleepy Hermanns
I love keepers like you Tim. Worth your weight in gold. The temps seem fine, are you taking them at the heigh of the tortoise shell under the heat and not on the wall alongside the lamp? Your infra red light...is it putting out any light for the night because if it is you would be better off with a ...

Re: Very sleepy Hermanns
IHiya from me too and welcome. Adding to Ninas advice, I am wondering if you are in the UK, because last May was very very hot with temps way up in the high 20's low 30's so the tortoise more than likely entered into estivation rather than hibernation. Estivation is a state of animal dormancy, simil...

Re: Enclosure advice
Hi Howard. I am still boweled over with your enclosure, however I do have to agree with Nina regarding the perspex top. Maybe you can remove the half that is not under the lights giving the covered top part the heatlamps and as long as they are controlled by thermostats I think that might be good an...
