Re: Peony / Tree Peony

:D What a SUPER few days for tortoises to enjoy the outdoor life! I've been busy achieving my goal of an adequate outdoor space for Achillea, rather than the previous safe space based on weedy grass. Turf removed & replaced with membrane + limestone pea grave. Area slightly increased. The fun bi...

Re: Peony / Tree Peony

SOLVED IT..... Having been browsing, yesterday I had un-ticked the red & orange/red filters!....Now re-ticked, it WORKS fine. So sorry - my computer settings remembered the filtering, & obviously I didn't even remember that I had done some filtering. I realised after trying 'tulip' & als...

Re: Peony / Tree Peony

I don't 'do' apps! I'm on the computer at work. If I go to database, houseplants & put in 'geranium' (simply as an example) it finds it straight away, but not 'peony'! I've tried to attach a screen shot, but it won't accept either a screen shot saved as word doc or pdf...However, I have copy/pas...

Re: Peony / Tree Peony

Hi Nina - I thought I was going mad, so I have tried again - both in the database home page, in trees & shrubs & then looked (again) in the alphabetical section - having chosen 'p', where it should be between: pelagonium & peperomia I think? Hmmmm....... Heather Your link works fine, by ...

Peony / Tree Peony

Hi ladies - I can't find this (surprisingly) in your database - but it may be my eyes!

What status is / are these please?

Thanks,

Re: Indoor pond breeding mosquitos(?)

I like Austin already - thanks for that link Lin.

The evaporation rate is already quite high (2 - 3 small buckets a week)...& the terrapins would love the fish....

Indoor pond breeding mosquitos(?)

In the last couple of weeks, many (not thousands, thankfully) mosquito-like insects have been emerging from the turtle pond in my conservatory. It's 'fun' catching them - they are messier than I expected when squashed, & my technique is improving.... My question is - can anyone suggest an insect...

Female - male mating behaviour!!

Achillea, you may remember, came to me nearly 3 years ago, as a 9y/o male called Achilles, & then laid some eggs..... Recently she has become fascinated by my plastic indoor 'shoes' - those sort of slip-ons, that I think might be beach-wear - that I wear all the time indoors. They are mauve, &am...

Growth ongoing?

Hi all - As Achillea approaches her teenage years, & is putting on weight very gently on her weed based diet, it occurred to me to ask whether tortoises ever stop growing? I guess they slow down when approaching 'terminal size'? How big do I expect my lovely bijou Hermann's to grow regards weigh...

Re: Hint of red in urine

I had my current rabbits vac'd for the first time recently - there's a no.2 strain of RHD, also known as VHD2, & I know it's now local. I lost my first gorgeous 'discarded' Fluffy white buck to a badger....if only I'd gone out to put them in just a couple of minutes earlier...I totally understan...

Thanks Lin - I remember my panic some years back when my first rabbit - a discarded buck - pee'd bright red up the walls! Normal in rabbits.....

Hint of red in urine

Hi - should I be concerned? Twice now I have seen a hint of red in Achillea's urine. In herself she is fine & dandy & normal. She free-ranges indoors, having her own preferred areas & her UV light in a warm area. She is eating slightly less this month. She does like purple pansies, so I ...

Shop bought diet

Hi - I have now had x3 Red Eared Sliders & a very special Southern Painted turtle for 2 years. (RES aged 28, 28 & 10-ish, Painted 28). The previous owner of the x3 older beasties fed them ZooMed Natural Aquatic Turtle Food, & then added in some dried shrimps & silk worm larvae for va...

Re: Guelder-rose

Thanks both - yes very helpful. Mine aren't the 'snowball' flower type, but the more lax type - with open florets around the edge of a flattish inflorescence (if I'm using the term correctly!). I believe it's the wild version - I'm lucky to have several trees / bushes. Very pretty leaves / autumn co...

Guelder-rose

Hi - I have one leaning (ever lower!) over Achillea's outdoor area, so wonder where it lies in the green / orange / red league. I also note your comments about hawthorn, which mentions leaves & berries, but not the flowers (except for their colour). Do the flowers also contain cyanide I wonder? ...

Re: Verbena Lanai

Excellent link - my equivalent reference for axolotls to 'TTT' is www.axolotl.org, run by a Brit. called John Clare.

Also - there was a whole BBC prog. about them a few weeks back. Google: BBC nuns & axolotls for loads of links.

Did I smile!! :D

Re: Verbena Lanai

At school I have a chest freezer in which in summer I keep a rotating stock of frozen 2L bottles of water, plus a couple of 2L tubs of frozen rain water, & on the Friday before last I used most of them. I haven't had to resort to this at home previously, as I had my tanks outdoors in undergrowth...

Re: Verbena Lanai

Ross-on-Wye - a solid 4 hours. SUCH a relief. One of my other passions is axolotls, who can't cope with water temperature above 18-20degC max for long. Nightmare. I've had to create a 'cold room' with several tanks for mine at home. As luck would have it I found a mobile air conditioner in a charity...

Re: Verbena Lanai

Thanks Nina - I bought the plants a couple of months back (I realise the recommendation about new plants) & it has recently started to spread & blossom freely & drop flowers. I'm not intending to 'feed' it at all, just wanted not to worry if Achillea picks up the odd dropped flower. It's...

Verbena Lanai

Hi - I've looked up Verbena, & see that 'shrub verbena' is poisonous. I think the pretty trailing verbena I have (Lanai - Early Deep Red) comes under the 'garden verbena' heading, judging by the leaves. It's a hybrid by Syngenta according to the label. Achillea has widened her munching this year...

Re: Any idea what this trefoil is please?

Wow - thanks Lin - I have never even heard that name before, or knowingly seen it, & I do normally recognise plants, even if I can't pin them down.

Presumably the leaf colour is variable, as mine has very distinct colouration, & one of your photos is plain green.
