Re: Steepness of ramp?

That is going to be a superb table, Steve! It's hard to tell the steepness of the ramp from your photo, but they can take it fairly step, as long as what they are walking on has traction so that they don't slip. Those little bars that you've put across the ramp will help a lot. I have roofing felt (...

Re: Maintaining temperature

Absolutely brilliant! Such a super table you've created for Truck -- loads of interest and things to climb up, over and walk around and under -- and I love that little sign 'Truck Lives Here'. You should be so proud of yourself, Amanda, and I'm sure that anyone reading this thread will be inspired b...

Re: Maintaining temperature

Hi Amanda, Yes, as long as your basking light doesn't put out UVB you can lower it to get the temperature higher. It's amazing that a 150W bulb at that distance isn't giving you the right temperature, but I wouldn't worry too much as 27C isn't terrible -- it just isn't ideal. And of course the weath...

Re: Maintaining temperature

Hi Anandita. Happy New Year to you and Truck! So sorry to be late in responding to your post, but I spent Christmas in Morocco and only got home on the 29th (and it's taking me a while to catch up on everything that came in while I was away). What a super Christmas present you gave to Truck, and I'm...

Re: Safe logs / bits of wood

Hi, and sorry to be so late in replying to your question. You’ve got some great ideas for.presents, and a log or piece of wood from your garden is a great idea. Tortoises like nothing better than to clamber over rocks and logs, and they help to enrich the environment for them. It’s very unlikely tha...

Re: Hibernation update....

Hi Emma,

Sounds like a perfect hibernation to me! They do move around quite a bit in hibernation, especially at the beginning, so Penny is doing fine. Have a lovely Christmas!

Nina (in sunny Morocco, where I’m spending Christmas with family).

Re: Allergic to my tortoise???

I think it is much more likely that your allergic reaction is to something other than the tortoise. Is there anything else that could have triggered that reaction (change of detergent, a particular food that you might be allergic to)? I have just checked some veterinary handbooks and it seems that t...

Thank you much, Phil, and what a wonderful card -- I absolutely love it! Re: Hibernation update....

Hi Emma, It's great to know that Penny is settling into her hibernation better than she did last time (they do like to keep us on our toes -- and anxious and stressed -- I think). Re opening the door -- just wafting it for 10 or 15 seconds is fine -- you just want a bit of an exchange of air, and I ...

Hi Abbey and Bubbles and sorry to be late in responding to your post. Congratulations on getting your little Horsfield, and I love the name Bubbles! It's a bit difficult for me to say what might be wrong with Bubbles, as it seems from what you described that you've got a good set-up and the temperat...

Re: Wind down update (and some questions)

Whew! I'm glad i misread it! All is well then. Several days before you put her in (or sooner) it's always a good idea to put in some bottles of water (I fill the door of the fridge with them and put a couple on the shelves too). Once that mass of water reaches the right temperature, it helps to stab...

Re: New owner of Horsfield tortoise

Hi Steve, My table is probably bigger than you want (it's 7' x 2'), but a general rule is to make the table as large as your space will allow, as tortoises like to have a large space to roam in. My table sits on top of a cabinet, where I keep all the electrics, spare bulbs, literature, etc., and it ...

Good luck and let us know how you get on. I would definitely consider a second level in your table (I have photos of mine being constructed if you're interested), and also make sure that whatever you have you will be able to raise and lower the heat/light lamp, and also provide for the possibility o...

Oh Stevie, I'm so sorry! Actually we always have some tortoises to rehome, and we advertise them on our Facebook page. No money can change hands -- we just want a tortoise to go to a good home, and I think you could provide one. Have a look at our FB page here: https://www.facebook.com/TheTortoiseTa...

Re: New owner of Horsfield tortoise

It is exciting, isn't it! Thanks for the photos. The upstairs bedroom is fine (but I would take the bedding out of there, because if he wees on it, it can go mouldy). It will be fine as long as he decides to sleep there, but if he prefers sleeping elsewhere then it's sort of wasted. The area underne...

Re: Is the shell staring to pyramid?

Hi Emma, Just the start of some pyramiding, and nothing to worry about as long as you maintain slow growth and ensure he has a low protein/high fibre diet with a good calcium supplement, and is well hydrated. Horsfields are such greedy tortoises that it is easy for them to overeat and grow too quick...
