Re: A Couple of General Questions

Hahaha! Thank you so much. I feel a bit better about it all now. It's such a huge adjustment for someone who's only ever had cats, guinea pigs, bunnies, hamsters and (for a while) a dog around. Even if I know the common illnesses they have and how to spot them, even if I am 100% sure that I'm follow...

A Couple of General Questions

How long do tortoises sleep this time of the year? I spent some time with Dusty yesterday afternoon about 5.30pm and she was yawning a fair bit! Also, how much should she be eating? Because the last couple of days I've put a handful of leaves in her enclosure and when I've got home from work, they'r...

Dead Nettle/Stinging Nettle?

If all the flowers have died off, how can you tell which it is without sticking a hand in? Husband valiantly got stung today to help check but I can't keep letting him do that. :D

Re: Money Plant?

Haha! Do you know I spent ages looking for it in the database and couldn't find it?! I think I've gone a bit mad the last few days!

Thank you very much for your help.

Money Plant?

I was given a money plant ages ago and since it clearly doesn't work (!) I was wondering if it's safe to give to my Hermann's tortoise? I've looked it up and think it's called Crassula Portulacea.

Re: Powersun Bulbs

Ooh that's good to know, thank you! It's on the substrate at the moment, so how would you recommend suspending it under the heat but so it isn't on the substrate? It is a Hermann's, and they couldn't say exactly without checking the birth certificate but somewhere between 1 and 2 years old. So...I c...

Nervous About Diet

So, I've been told conflicting things and I'm no longer sure what to do!! The tortoise I'll be getting is a Hermann's tortoise. I was initially told their diet should be 90% leaves and 10% fruit and veg. However, now I keep coming across comments (elsewhere) that they should never have ANY fruit or ...

Re: Powersun Bulbs

Ahhhh, that's brilliant, thank you! I've got it set up now. I have to have it all set up and run the lamp as though the tortoise is in there for a few days to a week, recording the temperatures a couple of times a day, in order to show I can maintain the right temperatures, before they'll let me buy...

Re: Bernard's got a new enclosure!

Wow, Bernard, that looks so good! Did you build it yourself or did you you buy it? Because if you built it, that's an incredibly impressive feat and I might hire you, lol!!!

Powersun Bulbs

I've been told the best solution for the heat/UV is a powersun bulb, as it emits both simultaneously. I bought this item, and a lamp stand for it today but looking for a dimmer thermostat online (something I understand is essential), it seems they can't be used with the Powersun. I'm not too sure wh...

Re: Thinking of Getting a Tortoise

Hahaha, I love that about the succulents! Thanks so much for your advice so far. I've checked on the link you gave and one of the vets is only a 20 minute drive from me in Christcurch (20 miutes tops, actually) so I should be able to register with them easily enough. Phew! Relieved because the next ...

Re: Thinking of Getting a Tortoise

Thank you all so much! Yeah, is it okay to say the pet shop on here? I work for Pets Corner and we're VERY strict about training and the animals we sell. We mostly sell small furries (hamsters, bunnies, guinea pigs, gerbils, guindea pigs) but a few of our stores sell reptiles and all of our stores s...

Re: Thinking of Getting a Tortoise

Hi Nina Thanks so much for replying. Sorry, my name is Vikki, lol! Yepp, we were told about that - vivs and terrariums don't have sufficient airflow for tortoises, is that right? Thankfully, we sell tortoise tables at work anyway but the trainer actually converted a large bookshelf into a tortoise t...

Thinking of Getting a Tortoise

Hi there I work for a very good, dedicated, pet shop and today I had training on reptiles. That training included Hermanns Tortoise and it's left me considering adopting one. We covered food, enclosure, substrate, UVB lamp, etc but there's one thing that concerns me and I realise it might be an emot...
