Re: How long without uva/uvb?

Hi TP,

Re your last question about getting rid of substrate -- it's fine to put on your garden or compost heap. I also save the little poos that I collect when I spot clean and put them on my garden too (lol, extra high quality fertilizer).

Re: Temperature help!

Hi Steve, It sounds like you and Titus have it all sorted -- absolutely perfect conditions, temperature, urates etc. -- he is one lucky tortoise! Would love to hear/see your plans for the outdoor enclosure. Just make sure that he can't dig under and out of any walls (so sink them in the ground), or ...

Re: I hope you're all staying safe during these scary times!

Hi Followly, I would normally say that this is almost certainly your male tortoise flashing his bits, but two years old is a bit young for that, so I'm not sure. How much does he weigh? A tortoise's penis is pink or brown and usually has a larger tip that is vaguely heart or umbrella shaped. There i...

Re: Asian Pigeonwings

How weird that your post came under Lin's name! Anyway, it's great to hear from you, and I hope that Muddy is doing well. My tortoises are bored and frustrated indoors, because we've had one of the wettest winters ever, and the temperature hasn't risen much above 12C (although this weekend they are ...

Re: My toirtoise has redfoot eye issue

Hi, and I'm sorry that your tortoise has an eye problem. Could you describe what it looks like (is the eye swollen, closed, does it have any discharge coming from it)? Can you post a photo? The most likely cause is that a bit of substrate has got into his eye, and I would advise first using some eye...

Re: Do i need a heat lamp?

Hi and congratulations on getting your tortoise. I can see that you posted in January on another thread about food, so I hope you now know what is good to feed to tortoises. That is great that you have made a table for your tortoise, and it will be a good place for him to live when it is not warm en...

Re: Exterior Baby growout table

Kyle that looks fantastic! What a great job you've done, and your little cherry heads will love it -- so much interest for them, and the plants look great. Is there a little area with water so that they can drink or bathe if they choose to? What are the temps like in Thailand now? Here we have cold ...

Hi Emma, What lovely photos! They really brightened my day, and I hope that you and Penny have a sunny and happy Easter too! My two are restless. Doris laid two eggs a fortnight ago and it looks like she might be getting ready to lay one or two more. She and Dolly always get restless and a bit aggre...

Re: Spring foraging in Northern Indiana (US)

Hi Jasmine, I know where Elkhart and South Bend are and, yes, very small world! I stayed pretty much in the Midwest (went to college in Champaign/Urbana and then to Madison,Wisc.) before moving to the UK. Re washing Buddy. What kind of spots are you washing off? Is it just dirt? (I'm assuming that t...

Re: Spring foraging in Northern Indiana (US)

Hi JC,

I just added a P.S. to my post above yours, about Northern Indiana. We lived there until I was about 12 and then moved to Park Forest, Illinois, a southern suburb of Chicago.
By the way, I meant to ask -- what is the name of your Sulcata (always nice to know that)?

Re: Best grasses for Sulcatas

Hi Jasmine, Thanks for contacting us, and it sounds like you've got great plans, and the space, to provide your Sulcata with a super diet. As far as the grasses are concerned, I found a nice little list on The Tortoise Forum and I think any and all of these would be fine: Buffalo grass (Buchloe dact...

Re: Poorly Horsefield, desperate

Thanks so much for such a full reply, and for privately sending me your vet details. That is an excellent vet, and so you are definitely in good hands. I do think that 35C is too high, as it's recommended to have the temps around 30C (maybe a degree or so higher or lower). The advantage of a tortois...

Dear TortmumB, Many thanks for contacting us, and i can understand your concern and stress at the state of your little Horsfield -- it really is heartbreaking to see them suffering and unwell, and it sounds like you are doing your very best for him. First of all, I have a few questions. 34C - 35C is...

Re: Temperature help!

No apologies necessary, and keep those questions coming! This is a really interesting -- and difficult -- question, and something we all struggle with. There are two temperatures, as you've discovered -- the air temperature and the surface (substrate) temperaturre). I tend to measure the air tempera...

Re: Travelling with a tortoise

That looks great, Steve! Shame about the reptile shop -- but it's a common experience that people have. I could send you links to authoritative articles that you could show to him, explaining why vivariums are very bad environments for tortoises and why tortoise tables are good, like this from The T...

Re: white spots on shell

Hi Scumpy and many thanks for the photos! My colleague, Lin, and I have looked at the photos and here is what we think: The tortoise with the white dots, definitely needs to be seen by a qualified reptile/'exotics' vet, as it looks like he might have some form of shell rot or fungus that needs treat...

Re: Travelling with a tortoise

Hi Steve, Which one did you get (they're not all the same)? The best are the T5 HO (high output) 12% tubes. How long was it? I would always get as long a one as possible so that it covers a lot of your table. I have a 4' one in my 7' table. You also, of course need the starter unit to go with it. Do...

Re: Travelling with a tortoise

Hmm, that's difficult. First of all is your thermometer a max/min one? If so then check that the temperature that is showing isn't the maximum or minimum one -- I know that sounds stupid but I've had that happen to me, where I've checked the max temperature and then haven't clicked to get it back to...

Re: Travelling with a tortoise

H Steve, Well, he's just settling in, and young tortoises do sleep quite a bit, so I wouldn't worry. Try moving him under the lamp just one more time and offering him some food at the same time and see if he's interested. You could give him a nice warm bath today and see if that helps too. I wouldn'...

Re: Travelling with a tortoise

Hmm, not sure it makes that much difference, but I think I might be tempted to put him in the table for a bit, and then the bath -- but I don't think it matters that much. For the bath, are you using something with high sides, like an old washing up bowl, so that he can't see out? That will minimise...
